A new radio question

Lots of discussion about new radios etc..

My question is this: On a 22 Axis is the rear camera good enough to make a good radio's video screen look good?

I do not want to get a nice new screen and find the camera is the hold back.
We are debating a new radio vs a dedicated rear view with new camera.

Your camera is likely 1280x 720 at best, so if you have a 1080P radio display you will be limited by the existing camera.

Ask yourself this, "is it necessary to be able to count the number of bugs plastered on the license plate of the truck behind you?" If your answer is, "No" then you have an answer about whether you need to upgrade the backup camera. The camera on my ACE has 620 line output, think 800 x 600. It is likely yours is the same. As far as I can tell the best output available would be equivalent to 1080P. Unless you OCD need to count the number of dead gnats on the car behind you the 620 line output will serve the main purpose of letting you see that there is something behind you,

I agree with you on that.

We really did not want to mix navigation, radio and rear view into one unit. Plus a stand alone monitor can be placed in a better location than factory radio. For us a dedicated rear view monitor ended up making the most sense.

Lone story short, some really excellent rear view monitors use wireless cameras and that really simplifies installation. These units do just about let you count bugs on your Toad's windshield if not the truck behind you.

I did just install a NAV radio and the new screen on the radio made a massive improvement in what the lowly 620 line camera shows. While I understand your point the radio location, my preference is to have as few "distractions" as possible. When you start adding a screen for the cameras, and then a screen for navigation in addition to the screen for the radio it starts to get a little too busy for my sensibilities. The biggest problem I have with the Class A dashboard is that it is too low. This is the one thing about the Class C motorhome that is more comfortable for me that I wish Class A builders would adopt and make the dashboard more "Automotive".

I did what Happy did above, and the Kenwood replacement radio with CD and no video was less than $100. The 7 inch monitor was cheap too, and I really like seeing my toad anytime without having to look down or fiddle with the controls.

Post 78 in my build thread in my signature below.
10" monitors that fold out of view.
(The digital dash in the picture is a 10 inch tablet running torque)
My 360° camera tutorial will be in a month or so.

I noticed that. We are searching for an arm to hang our 7 inch monitor from the Axis bunk so that the rear view monitor will be in a location much like a rear view mirror. We use the bunk 2x a year so hoping to find an arm that folds out of the way.

Something extendable and foldable will allow for adjustment.
