There is quite a bit of room under the doghouse. I put FatMat 3/4" (Amazon) under the doghouse (be patient its a pain to get off) and I put more under the hood.

Then I got some sound deadener (Amazon) and put it also all under the hood and some in the front wheelwells. We can now carry on a conversation.

Scubawise,
Dynamat under the doghouse was one of the first things that I did to our E450.
Made a huge difference in noise level.
Yes, you can do this job by yourself.

Good Luck.

Did you put the sound deadener on top of the fatmat?

I put the deadener whereever I didn't put fatmat (so mostly fatmat in the doghouse and a little under the hood and then the deadener went everywhere that I didn't have fatmat).
