RV Specific GPS

I am considering buying an RV friendly GPS that will keep me off of non RV friendly roads, route me around low overpasses and away from bridges and tunnels that don't like propane.
Has anyone had good luck with any specific units ?

Pete

I got one of the Rand RV ones about 3 years ago from CW. Used it while traveling in our fiver and now have changed the inputs for our Challenger.

In probably a little over 20,000 miles of using it in 26 states it only missed one low clearance. Thank goodness that was in a city and I saw the sign in time to avoid damage.

It has worked very well, is large and visible, and I have gotten probably 3 free updates so far.

I have 9,000 miles on the Garmin and it has never steered me wrong. Updating it often is very important

I have an older model Garmin. I contacted Garmin to see if the data base could be upgraded to that of the RV specific Garmin. I was told it could not BUT Garmin would give a trade-in allowance on my older Garmin for the new RV Garmin. I think it was either a percentage or around $100 (I'll keep searching for that information).

Thank you all . Some great info in that sticky that Jamie mentioned.
I think I'll be looking into a Garmin RV 760LMT , perhaps Santa will bring me one for Christmas !
I will also be buying a truckers road atlas to keep in the rig.

I would like to hear from anyone who has used both Rand Mcnally and Garmin, that would be able to share some pros and cons.

We were using Google Maps with pretty good results, until one day last summer on a back highway in western Illinois. The friendly voice said "Turn left" and just before I made the turn, I looked down the road and saw a sign warning, 10'6" with arrows above and below the numbers. Glancing on down the road, I could see the railroad underpass.

Whoa! Now, our Vegas 25.2 measures 11'3" and I always allow an extra 3". Was able to avoid the turn and stay on the road we were on, but had we turned, we would have been unhooking our towed car to get turned around.

At our next stop, I ordered a Garmin RV 760LMT delivered to a friend where we could get it. I have a few issues with it but they might go away if I spent a little time with the manual! At least I know it won't direct me into a place my RV shouldn't be.

We have the Good Sam Rand RVND 7725 and have found it to be very reliable and accurate. I use the GS Trip Routing Program on their website. Once I've got the route laid out, I can download it into the 7725.

All that being said, I also use the built in Jensen GPS and compare both. No discrepancy, we're good to go. If there is a discrepancy, out comes the paper trucker's atlas...to date, the 7725 has only been wrong once and that error was in taking us on a "shortcut" that was an OK route, but, that route bypassed a Pilot station I wanted to use. Turns out it was my mistake...I didn't download the "final" (all changes made) version. The moral of that tale is that no matter which one you choose, you can't "bet the farm" on its accuracy; that's why we use 2 and let the truckers atlas settle any discrepancies.

I'm beginning to think the best solution is to not care where you are going or how long it takes. Then be careful and always watch out in front of you.

If you use Garmin RV or Rand, you still should consult a Trucker's Atlas when traveling. It only takes a couple minutes. There is a section for each state that lists all their low clearances, simply look at the list to make sure you won't be anywhere close to any.

Where's a good place to pick up a Trucker's Atlas? Book store?

Just about any truck stop with a store will have the atlas.

I have the Garmin RV 760 LMT and love it. I have it mounted on the curve above the speedometer. I never have to look down. One time it told me to take the trucker's lane on a freeway interchange. I couldn't figure out why. That is, until I looked to my left and saw the low overpass that the regular drivers were using.

You put in the length, width, height, and GVWR (for going over bridges) and it avoids places where your RV can't go.

Just FYI: The 760 has been discontinued and replaced by the 660. The 760 is still available at many places on-line and is being discounted since it has been replaced. The 760 is a good unit.

And the 760 has a bigger screen than the 660.

I just went to the Garmin website and they are still selling the 760.

If you go to the Garmin Store the 760 is available, if you go to garmin.com they do not show in the current product line due to being discontinued.
