Solar controller location in MH.

Hello all,

Just purchased a 200W Renogy ground system. I plan on purchasing extension cables 15’ 10AWG to installed between the panels and controller.

Looks like the controller should be mounted in the MH protected from the sun, high temps. and water. It came attached to the solar panels and I assume I need to relocate. Any recommendations where to mount? We have a 2014 31E, thanks

I assume you have the Renogy Voyager PWM controller which Renogy says is waterproof. But as you note it would be better to put it in a protected location. I don't know your coach's layout but for portable panels I would install this outside plug in socket on the wall of your motorhome near the batteries and wire it to the controller located in a compartment and wire its output to the batteries with 10 gauge.

Here is a page of sockets and plugs. BTW the SAE socket is also sold under the Zamp brand but much cheaper here- https://www.amazon.com/s?k=sae+socke...f=nb_sb_noss_1

Yes, it’s a 20A (came with 15A fuse) PWM controller was looking for a location to mount in the MH. Thanks I will look into link.

Do I need a fuse between the controller and panels?

No. Those solar panels can only put out about 7 amps each and the 10 gauge wire is good for 60 amps, so it is impossible to overload that circuit. But do put a fuse near the battery- 20A a 15A is marginal for the current.

According to this, you should have a disconnect between the panels and the solar controller

A code requirement and also handy if you want to do work on your controller and not get shocked by the panels. :-)
