Solar Panels on roof of Serrano

I am installing 4 Renogy 100 Watts Monocrystalline Solar Panels, Renogy Adjustable Solar Panel Tilt Mount Brackets to a SolarEpic 40A MPPT Solar Charge Controller with MT50 Remote Meter. I followed the cable TV wires thru the roof down to the controller, then 8GA wires to the batteries. No problem. My trouble is when mounting the panel brackets to the roof, the screws went into air. I tried using a drywall stud finder, but that did not help. I can see the roof has waves from what looks like joists going across. I have aimed my screws to those joists, but it still seems like I am going thru air. I sure would hate to have those panels rip off going down the highways. So far, I have only installed 2 of the panels using 20 screws each. It is holding solid, but I sure would feel better with 4 solid screws per panel than 20 air screws. I am considering gluing an aluminum diamond plate under the panels and over the mounting brackets to add some strength to the installation. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I used these anchors. They work great!

Thank you. Are you adding an inverter as well?

I used blind well nuts to install 40X65 residential solar panels on the roof of mine. You are looking at only 1/8 inch luan on the roof in most spots. I documented my install here http://www.thorforums.com/forums/f27...31e-14555.html Also just noticed I labelled the thread wrong with my model number.

Dave, it's likely you have not only a luan wood roof substrate below the rubberized roof cover, but also a layer of 'styrofoam' rigid roof insulation layer below the luan that provides for some roof movement, temperature changes, and gives the ability to more easily walk on the roof without the luan being stressed as much between aluminum roof joists, which is why your length of screw may not have quite reached the joist.

of course, another idea is to attach several simple aluminum lengths to the roof, then attach the panels/tilt frames to that, instead.

I used 6" long home made aluminum Z brackets, Lexon clear adhesive/sealant for the brackets and screws. Then covered that with Dicor self leveling. About 7 k miles so far with no problems. Screws were # 12's SS.
