Still Stuck in the Past
Fighting the urge to install a CB in RV. To rationalize my decision: If anyone has one, please give me your two cents worth? Don't take much to convince me.

10-4 good buddy. I have an older Midland Side band unit waiting to find time and proper space for it. You can never have too many forms of communication IMHO. I say go for it!

Lot of work for little to no use. Most truckers have gone to 2 and 10 meter.

Cbs
Don't know about todays CB. but in the 80's They kept me awake many nights going across the country. Driving solo it's hard to keep awake, but if you have a Good Buddy to yak with you can while away the hours.
One trip I was going thru the desert and ran out of gas( got gas the last available place) had been talking to an 18 wheeler behind me. He said he'd give me a ride into town. By the time I pulled over locked the doors, I took two steps climbed into his truck and had ride into town.
May have to get a new one for the MH

Bought a Cobra 75WX ST several years ago when we were still towing a trailer. Never really used it. The only time it seems to be useful is when traffic is backed up for miles, Truckers will usually tell you whats going on, but in most cases I t doesn't make your wait any shorter.

From what I've read they don't work well. The CB antenna needs metal on the roof to project the signal the fiberglass front Caps or the TPO roof won't do the job

You just need about 12" x 12" piece of thin galvanized or similar metal stuck to your roof then the antenna placed on that. The metal will act as the ground plane needed.

Your answer created a question. How tall of an antenna? With rig almost 12', not much to spare.

Hang a whip off the rear bumper, with the 12" x 12" piece of thin galvanized stuck between it, and your mount.

I agree with Bob, a whip antenna on the rear bumper would work.

I tried the metal plate on the cap with terrible results.ended up using a marine ant mounted above drivers window, right to the fiberglass.made it fairly easy to run cable down left a piller
The tip of ant should be above the top of veh for best reception, plus rear bumper is a whole lot of cable to run.

Guess I am stuck in the past. I have always had a CB and do keep it on the ch 19 good buddy. I have a 3ft non ground plain firestick ant., this does not need anything metal to reflect off of. I installed the ant. mounting bracket half way between the drivers window and roof. That gave me about 2/3 of ant. above the roof line. On the inside, the bolts came through in one of the cubbies so hiding that was easy.

I bought a handheld Cobra and it works quite well. I use the earphone so the wife is not disturbed by the squawk. Frankly I don’t think I would do an install because there seems to be only local truckers on the band anymore. It’s certainly not like it was in years past when all truckers talked on Ch 19. Sometimes you can go hours with no talk at all and you’re passing trucks all the while.

I’ve been thinking about installing one myself just for traffic information if anything.
