Switching to AGM Batteries

I have seen lots of folks comment in the forum about switching to AGM batteries (especially if re-placing house batteries that have gone dead). I was under the impression that you need to verify the converter's charging system and how it functions especially charging modes before changing to AGM batteries.

I don't know a whole lot about this and have not researched it, but it seems to me there might be a lot of folks out there with converter/chargers that are not up to par for the AGM batteries that owners might have installed without doing the proper homework. And also having to change to a more competent converter/charger when installing expensive AGM batteries could add significant expense to the battery update.

Anyone want to provide guidance and offer cautions??

AGM are still lead-acid batteries. Chemistry is the same as is the 50% discharge rule. They are less tolerant of overcharging by car alternators at 14+ VDC for extended periods but a standard 3 stage charge in your MH needs no changes when going AGM.

What Tfryman said I'd my understanding also.

What size, voltage (12 or 6), and AH are you looking at?

Have been going back and forth on the 6v or 12v question. Also thinking of sacrificing one of the basement storage areas to add.more battery power.

The only real advantage to use AGM'S is you no longer need to remove a batter to check the last cell's fluid level.

If that's the only advantage: what disadvantages exist for them?
