You need to read up on inverters. You are way over thinking this. Your little inverter is pass thru capable. The big one you has is not. The little one does not use battery power when on shore power. It has a transfer switch inside. The big one does not. The little one uses battery power only when NOT on shore power. The big one uses battery power all the time. There is no back feed of any kind.

That would be the inverter's ATS which your friend's 2000 watt inverter does not have; so using his inverter the plugs are ALWAYS powered by the inverter and house batteries.

You have to have either an internal or external ATS, or a manual transfer switch to be able to power the plugs from batteries when there is no SP and from SP (or the generator) when that is available.

So if I left the inverter on by accident and plugged in SP what would happen to the samlex 2000inverter...?

It has to be an automatic transfer switch...what could it look like? I am assuming it is close to the power panel.

Is there a cheap way to trace wires?

Yes, it's called a toner and is used by phone and network people all the time.

Toner:

Inverter external ATS:
