Tire valve extenders

To remove the covers, you will see 2 opposing nuts that are a little different than the rest of them. These are the 2 that you have to unscrew to remove the cover.

This is a really cool idea.

If I have this system installed, can I forget about TPMS?
Or, on my little Class-C, can I go with only 4 TPMS transmitters instead of 6?

I had success at a local truck tire shop. They did the work (removing the shiny hubcap cover and retrofitting the dualies with “capless” valve stems), but even better, they showed me how to do it for myself. You will need a special lug wrench that fits the decorative lug nuts. However, it’s not expensive and can be turned by hand. No air tool is required.
This is good to know, because you may want to remove the shiny hubcap if the wheels get caked with mud. (Been there; done that!).
Just look in the phone book or online for a truck tire store.

Well, yes it could. And, it has become impossible to find a tire shop that can balance a tire while it is mounted on the car.

The closer you mount the crossfire device to the center of the wheel, the less it matters. For that reason, I mounted mine directly over the hub, nearly coaxially to the the center of the wheel.

My problem is that now the wheel covers can't be put back on. I'm thinking about removing the inner portion of the wheel covers to allow the Crossfire to slip through.

If you're having trouble visualizing, I can take some pictures.

If I read this right, sounds great on paper until you get a leak. One punctured tire may let the air out of both tires. Not good.

That's a great point and you are astute to have thought of it.

But, the people at Crossfire thought of it first and designed a failsafe to prevent that from happening.

Something else that might not have been mentioned in this thread: when you buy a Crossfire device, you have to specify the pressure in your tires. Mine is 80 psi. If the pressure falls below that threshold, a read flag appears in the window. Nice.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get my wheel covers to fit over or around this:

I will probably remove the inner ring of the wheel cover so the Crossfire device can poke through.

Has got to be easier that scrubbing and painting my dirty wheels.

Find the lug cap with the dimple, remove that cap and then remove the simulator.

On the Ford E-Series cutaway chassis the fronts are "outies" with a full cover aluminum simulator cover, and the rears are "innies" with full simulator covers. There are no separate center hub covers.

I remove them by gently prying near one of the wheel weights with a very large flat blade screwdriver, the slowly working around. At about the halfway point grab the opposite side you've pried loose... give a good tug and it should pop off.

You shouldn't need to remove the fronts.

I bought a kit of extenders off Amazon. I only air up maybe twice a season... I install an extension, air up then remove it. Not much of a hassle for only twice a year.

As a relative newbie at this and reading all the horror stories about leaking extenders I decided to buy a set of extenders as a few posts have pictured. Nothing fancy just screw into inner and outer rears to check and refill to specs then remove and toss in the on-the-road toolkit. It seems to me one leaking rear tire is a recipe for a very expensive lesson not to mention a dangerous one at that.

Is it a PIA? Yeah but part of the joys of RV life I think.

I had extenders on my inners for over 2 years and never lost a pound of pressure. Freightliner threw the extenders and 2 tire minder sensors away when they did my valve stem recall a couple weeks ago.

I have DOUBLE extenders. Inside rear is a swivel type with a straight attached and topped off with a pass though tpms.
Outside rear is two straights and pass through tpms.
Front is just pass through tpms.
Never a hint of a problem.

My e450 covers are stainless steel as equipped by Thor. You won't be cutting the centers out.
The center of my front caps are cut out so my 4x4 locking hubs can stick through for access, but the hole requires a specialty saw or a plasma cutter.
