Thanks to this thread I also taped up the baffle, moved the freeze probe, and plugged the ducts beyond the roof vents. Since I'm in Michigan, though, I haven't had a hot enough day to see if they all made a difference LOL.

Just recently I also did this mod to my A/C:

Yep, these mods are a life saver. Zero or low cost mods with high ("Cool") returns.

I like to install the soft start as well. Much quieter startups and when we are "mooch docking" it sounds like we can run off of thier 15 amp plug in and still run the AC during the hot part of the day.

But I cant justify $300 for this mod when i dont "really need it" right now (to many other things I want first - lol).

Plus I installed a 30 amp hookup in my garage last year so that took care of my big concern of running the RV AC on my driveway for pre-trip cool downs or just working inside the RV (plus for extra sleeping space for company).

This forum rocks. So many great mods and so little time for me to install them.

Well I would like to thank Long & Winding road for this thread and his ideas. I had already done the warm and cold air separator yesterday after reading about that. Mine had about 3/4" opening on each A/C unit. Closed those both off. I didn't take before readings.

I went out and took readings today. 84 degrees outside and 95 degrees inside. Started up the front unit and after a few minutes I got 58 degrees coming out of the vent. Moved the probe a couple of times and got down to 48 degrees.

Went to the back unit and ended up with basically the same temps.

Tomorrow I am buying the insulation products to do the top components. I am hoping for a degree or two drop.

Our MH is 39 foot long and has two 13.5k A/C units. It cools OK but I always thought it could do better. Our old '04 37 footer did a much better job of keeping things cool.

We are going camping next week for four days with temps in the mid to high 80's. Should be a good test.

Thanks again Long & Winding road! Great job!

Just kicked both A/C's on at the same time to check temp. It's still 82 degrees outside. Granted it's cooler in the rig now but I was still surprised. Temp showed 40 degrees and the rig was 82 - 83 degrees. That's a nice drop. Still haven't done the rooftop insulation mods. Very happy!!

Well I insulated the cool box and double insulated the tubes on the roof. Kicked on both A/C's. Outside it was 85 and inside it was 93-96. After an hour (you can see the time top right on the temp panel) it was down to 83 and 81. That's 15 degrees in the front. Vent temp now is down to 37 degrees. All this was with the quick cooling vents closed. Loving all these cooling mods and I haven't even closed off the ends of the ducts yet.

Two hours in and it is looking great. Front has dropped down to 73. That's 23 degrees in 2 hours. I'll have to mess with the air flow to get more cooling to the back. It's never cooled that well. Might be a little too good. Temp out of vent is 32 almost 31 degrees. I did check the coils and there wasn't anything freezing up. We leave Monday for 4 days. We will see how it does.

Ductwork correct??

New to this forum and reasonably new to Thor axis. I have already taken much advice from these threads and plan to post my own support in the near future.

So I recently took the cover off my Thor axis 2018 airxcel unit and it looks to me like the I summation wall is in the wrong spot. It seems to need to slide over to put the opening all on the same side. Can anyone advise? I am attaching a pic.

I can easily move and HVAC tape but I wanted to make sure that is accurate.

Yep. Looks like another poor Thor installation job. Make sure you look up into the ducts and make sure they are air tight and not bleeding air up into the ceiling. That is also a common problem.

How cold is too cold?

Today is 96 degrees outside. I have the A/c set at 82 since the RV is just sitting in our back yard.
Used my digital thermometer (the kind you point at an object, pull the trigger and it gives the temp of the object) to check the air temps coming out of several vents throughout the RV.
At the unit in the ceiling, the temp was 44 degrees. At the vent furthest from the unit, I got 52 degrees.
I Shut the A/C off and took the inside cover off the unit and moved the temp probe up about 3 inches. It’s original location was at the very bottom of the coils.
Restarted the A/C and after about 10 min, I was getting a reading of 32 degrees as the air exited the plenum and 43 degrees at the furthest vent.
My question is, is the 32 degree reading at the unit too cold? Am I at risk of the unit freezing up? Should I move the temp probe a little lower.?

IMO - I would move it lower some. My A/C temp gauge shows 40 to 45 deg. is "Ideal" temp. So if you had 38 to 42 that would be perfect (IMO).

Im afraid when its like 98 deg outside with 75% humidity your unit will freeze up when you need it the most. Of coarse thats assuming its running like 8 - 10 hours straight. It may be fine for just a couple of hours without freezing up - but all day is the true test.

Yep, tape it up. That will make your AC work much better.

I also taped around and cracks / joints and I tired to smooth out the air flow (using the tape) going into the roof ducts.

Get a "car" AC temp probe from AutoZone and stick it in your air ducts (with your AC cover back on). See if you can get your output temp around 40 - 45 deg. Mine started out around 65 deg last spring.... now its consistanly 45 deg with no problems.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Did all your interior mods on a brand new Thor Ace 30.2 50amp rig. I was shocked to see the rear unit didn't have a divider installed. The front unit divider was sitting horizontal. Useless. Unbelievable lack of fit and finish from factory. Sounds like this is common! Thank you at this forum for the advice!! You guys ROCK!!

Im glad it helped. Im still amazed on how well my cools..... when I first started reseaching everyone one was like "thats normal, get use to it, not much you can do, or my favorite "install a 2nd AC unit" (Hence the name of this Tread).

I be most of the AC units are working fine.... they just need a few tweaks and most owners would be fine with one unit (esp if thier RV is 28 foot or shorter).

But If I had a 29/30 foot or longer I would still get the 2nd AC option. It would be nice to have one going in "the other room" either while watching TV at night trying to sleep.

Can't believe how cool it blows now!! Curious to see how much cooler I can get it with the future roof mods. Not sure how to do just yet. More research to be done!

I did all the things you mentioned, and I'm sitting under this piece of garbage sweating.
I've come to the conclusion I allowed the dealer to screw me by selling me an inferior product.
When I get home from the Kentucky race I'm telling my wife that this thing has to go, for my sanity....2 years old and I dont trust this thing to go around the block.
2 air conditioners going and it's not cool at all...I can't deal with being this mad anymore, I either sell it or burn it. Although I'd finally get some satisfaction from the latter.
