When I speak of effectiveness, is inclusive of what is actually needed to accomodate a net goal. We did look bigger or smaller. Smaller had too many reductions in capacity and space. Larger added unused/un needed capacity and increased expense.

Do what fits what you need to accomplish.

Gravity is tough to overcome. Weight/effectiness is a piece of the overall puzzle and beyond the grasp of many. Is remarkable how effective moving mass is with various combinations.

Did this topic run off into the deep weeds!!
If you buy a rv & low mpg is a big concern DO NOT buy any rv, towable or drivable, simple!

Absolutely, MPG makes a difference, and it becomes more obvious if you plan a 1,000-mile trip or longer.

That’s one reason van campers have become more popular lately. Most should be able to get 16 MPG easily if driven like a motorhome (60~65 MPH) and a “few” can get close to 20 MPG on gasoline if driven at moderate speeds.

RV size matters more than engine upgrades like OP wanted to discuss. It’s OK to want a large and roomy RV, but expect a guzzler not a sipper.

Sure enough. We did a 4,000 mile trip in our class A in June - at about the worst of gas prices. Averaged $4.79/gallon and 7mpg. Fairly brutal. We’ve since downsized to a class B (gas mileage wasn’t the primary motivation!) and we’re getting 15.8mpg now.

I still say that discussing fuel efficiency vis a vis a recreational activity is the height of ignorance. If we are trying to save the planet, then ban recreational vehicles altogether. If we are trying to make recreational activities more affordable, then trade resort campgrounds for public lands or Disney for a state park. Either way, fuel efficiency and RV travel will never balance to our liking.
