Winegard Carryout & HD Satellite

I’ve had a Winegard Carryout for probably 12 years and it’s performed wonderfully, using some old SD receivers I’ve got. I’ve been reading that people are having issues now with DirecTV and not being able to get programming for what seems to be a number of reasons.

We’re going to be traveling to Arizona (from CA) next month so I called DirecTV to see what I could learn. Turns out they’re doing away with their SD satellites, and they’ll be completely shut down as of Jan. 1.

My Carryout doesn’t “do” HD with DirecTV. Is there a portable antenna out there, similar to the Carryout, that does HD with DirecTV?

And no, I’m not interested in streaming.

Thanks for your help.

I have a perfectly good KLH satellite antenna from old motorhomes that works with DirecTV SD . I learned several things , One was what you found out, DirecTV SD was being discontinued i, 2 that it was cheaper and easier to get a Dish Network carry out antenna and Wally receiver. They let you turn it on and off if you're not using your motorhome year-round and it gets HD and SD. 3 if you have Dish in your home and we switched just because of this, it only cost $7 a month to have a receiver in your motorhome instead of a whole nother account like DirecTV.

DISH TV is the way to go in my mind.
- I get HD everywhere I travel as long as I have southern exposure (vs with streaming I need wifi or high speed data)

I have a DISH Residential account so by adding the RV I pay just an extra $5/mo for my Wally + hard drive.
I currently have a Winegard G3 permanently mounted on my RV roof. But, I just ordered the Trav’ler sk-1000 with Hybrid LNB so that my Wally can perform with two tuners just like at home.
Or, for long trips...I can carry my Hopper3 along with me

Exclamation

no DirectTV has HD 'portable' antennas, only permanent roof mounted 'traveler' versions, which are expensive...

I have a DISH KING Tailgater 4500 portable, which has two outputs, for sale, for $150, and works perfectly for both SD and HD channels with DISH programming. It is light weight, has a carry handle, and is easily stored, and used on the roof, or on the ground, and needs no 'tripod' - it acquires the satellites automatically and doesn't require to be 'level' - use it anywhere you like.

Just completed swap out of a roof-mount Carryout G3 to a Trav’ler Hybrid LNB
Like others on this Forum, after going thru the limited viewing of a single LNB dome dish, I decided to upgrade to the Winegard Trav’ler.

Amazon has the best price right now...still, $1500 is a lot of RV bucks.
I also ordered the large size mounting plate to give the unit more support on my TPO roof.

Took me about 3hrs to install and clean-up.

Works as designed. So now my Wally + hard drive is 2-Tuner capable.
Which means...I can watch one channel while recording another. Something I could not do with my G3 dome dish.

Also, since i mostly boon-dock...once the Trav’ler is aligned to the 3 satellites (abt a 5 min process), I can turn off the power. Then it stays aligned until I move the RV.
Versus, with the dome dish which requires constant power & drains house batteries.

Here are some photos of the install:
