Alaska Adventure

Just returned from a 7 week 9600 mile round trip to Alaska. Had an awesome experience. Drove around 150 to 200 miles each day. Had no trouble getting campgrounds. Stayed mainly where we had full hookups. Average price around $40. No trouble getting diesel when needed. Saw lots of wildlife. Roads were good. About 100 miles total of rock/gravel in various spots where road repair was being done. Was cooler weather so we had no bugs to contend with.

Had no issues with the Thor Citation. The Mercedes diesel took on the mountains without any problems. Around 17 mpg. Everything worked as expected in the RV.

If you are thinking about driving to Alaska.. Do it!

We went up to Jasper on the Ice Fields parkway, then to Dawsen Creek which is milepost 0 of the AlCan highway which is a great drive. Went North as far as Denali Park. Stopped in numerous towns on the way. Stayed a week in the Homer/Seward area. Get the Milepost Book as it gives all the info and has a great map. We were gone 7 weeks and probably needed 10 to 12 weeks to do it right. I am sure we missed a lot of things. Another reason to return someday.

Sounds great. Early stages of planning. Watching lots of youtubes on subject. Hope to go 2020 mid-July and come back early September. We hate bugs.

The Milepost Book is great. I also found that if you use the facilities at local Visitors Center (free WIFI) make sure you pick up the local guide book. They are free have a lot more local info and maps. And, the biggest plus is the latest road conditions going up the road.

One place to watch out for sure is the Sign Forest at Lake Watson. I left mine with my name and homebase. Make up one in advance of your trip.
