My opinion is when this situation develops, there needs to be one version of the events. Obviously it's best if the perp is at least partially inside when this happens. Sad part there will be probably lots of paperwork.
When I was deployed years ago, my wife called the MPs because she had a prowler at our bedroom window. With a hand fun in her hand she asked the MP- “ when can I shoot the guy?”. His reply as long as part of him is in the house when we get there. Unfortunately that is not the case in many places.

It takes patience my friend, patience. Give them enough rope so you can hang them. Might have to sit real quiet and shut the dog up, if one there. But good things come to all that wait. Make sure you have adequate insurance to cover the clean up and repairs that may be necessary.

Just try to remember how far those bullets can travel...
They're not breaking in to harm you: they just want your stuff! If you make it difficult for them to take it: they'll turn tail and run!
But go ahead and kill one of them: you'll find out the hard way...

FOR THE RECORD: I am armed 100% of the time. There's always a sidearm and a tactical knife somewhere on me.
But they are only there as the last line of defense. Always avoid the situation when you can.
Some of you sound as if you're "hunting bad guys"... Stupid choice!!!

That is way boondocking is so popular: no witnesses and plenty of places to dig holes. Better to judged by 12. I am too old to fight but too young to die. Although I do have an ice axe also a tomahawk from my military days. It does the job, too.

It's a stainless steel .45, and the blade is out of S30V...
Dropping the soap is not suggested.

Hunted them in the military but that was a long time ago. I do defend my property, and family in my house, RV , car and personal space. When seconds count the police are minutes away. I live in the Portland Or area and they are closer to an hour away.

So quick to shoot same unarmed junkie/thief or some drunk wandering into the wrong house yet life is so precious some must preach about masks and shots.

Do a crossreference type search on some of our commandos here and see who spews out of both sides of their hollow mouth.

"They're not breaking in to harm you"... Bob, THAT comment has me rolling... How would you know what their intentions are?

"Some of you sound as if you're "hunting bad guys"... Stupid choice!!!" Where did that come from? No offense, but it must be nice to live on fantasy island. Judging how you are armed to the teeth alone, tells me you're waiting for "it" to come to you... Assumptions were both ways.

Kind of hard to think someone would write that with a straight face. Takes all types though. Much of this crime is meth and crack heads who don't think straight anyway and going BOO isn't going to help you or stop them. I'll take my approach, you take yours.

I was thinking the same thing. I think Bob was a college-cop back in the day. Thins have changed. I'm retired SWAT from Cali and I've seen it all...

I ASS-U-ME nothing when approached by any stranger. One of my favorite General Mattis Quotes -

Loved this guy! He was in command at 29 Palms back in my time there.

No College Cop: just an NRA trained and certified Home Defense Instructor...
And a New York State Sportsmans Educator

Where the bullet finally might end up: must always be considered.

The right tool for the right job. In this case a scatter gun, long or hand, has more "rounds" and less likely to keep going. Or using a hollow point so that the first thing, perp, it hits gets the effect. Ball and armor piercing might be helpful in some instances, but not in this case. If the firearm is balky with hollow points, some small .380 can be, get a new/different gun.

We take the typical .38 Spl. Target load (148 gr lead hoow-base wadcutter loaded to 700 fps); and turn the projectile around. It gives you a HUGE open nose that can't help but shed energy into whatever it hits.
They are VERY aero-wonky: but still fly straight enough out to almost fifty feet.
Beyond that: the threat is gone anyway!
