Inside with the door open. Tilapia is such an easy fish ... no fishy taste or smell when cooking ... the perfect fish for fish tacos.

I'm pretty particular about the fish I eat especially farm raised, Tilapia is an easy to raise fish and comes from a lot of sources. Some in certain asian countries have horrific conditions and I would avoid. My advice, check carefully the source country.

I'm even dubious about the claim of "wild caught". I believe nearly all Tilapia is farm raised though... basically the "chicken of the fish industry" (sorry Tuna). I have relatives who won't eat Tilapia because of the fishes affinity to the warm water from power plant effluent.

A bonus is they are herbivores, so they avoid the mercury passed between food-chain species of carnivores. Being a strictly warm water fish and likely farmed, I agree that sources may be sketchy... buyer beware.

No problem for me. I don't like to eat fish at all. And I don't like to smell it cooking either. And I can't stand to walk past the sea-food section in the grocery store because of the smell.

This will never work for me. Give me an old fashioned Porterhouse.

I have learned to eat quite a variety... quite the opposite of a picky eater... a chef's delight! In a shtf situation I definitely wouldn't go hungry...

I do love a good fish taco but tilapia will eat anything and live in almost any water. So, I try not to eat them. They are also an invasive species taking over rivers and lakes around San Antonio. The TPWD ask that if you catch them, either eat them or leave them on the bank to die. You will get a ticket if you catch and release.

Tilapia is the fourth-most consumed fish in the United States dating back to 2002. The popularity of tilapia came about due to its low price, easy preparation, and mild taste.[4]

And few people know where it comes from or what conditions those fish farms are maintained. For fish yes it's cheap because it can be grown in any back field sewer pond. Same as swai.

The same can be said for nearly every meat product consumed in the U.S. - especially "mass farmed" chicken. My grandfather raised beef cattle (small operation). Taking a walk through a slaughterhouse as a teenager is a real eye opener. My daughter wrote a college thesis on that... she's been a vegan ever since. Me? I'm still addicted to bacon, a good pork roast - and splurge on the occasional strip steak.

Human/animal waste in effluent (which sounds gross) is gradually broken down by bacteria to be mostly harmless. The real threat is chemicals and heavy metals contained in the run-off of fertilizers, pesticides etc. which find a way into our fresh water supplies... which is another subject altogether, because this is really getting way off the OP's original post!

Now... who's ready for some Tilapia?

I don't disagree at all what you are saying but since farm raised products come from a variety of sources/countries, being selective where you get them is helpful. Tilapia, swai and many fresh water shrimp come from those suspect sources and I avoid. There are good ways to get a good product. Best fish tacos I've had were made by my daughter in law from freshly caught cod we caught off Fort Bragg CA a few years ago.

EDIT adding, fresh water shrimp has no taste in the opinion of my taste buds and since I live near the gulf coast, buying anything other than freshly wild caught shrimp is pretty dumb.

I absolutely agree with the fresh caught... the best fish I've ever had was fresh caught pan-fried lake perch here in Ohio! My daughter-in-law's father keeps a freezer stocked with catfish he catches in Burr Oak lake... a VERY close second place for me!
