Holding tank maintenance
I just got an advert for Unique RV Digest-It. Has anyone used it? What do you use for your black and grey tank maintenance?

Once it's empty and cleaned: I just leave it alone. After all: what could happen to it?

agree...I don't understand any 'need' for any 'maintenance' of holding tanks, as they are simply just 'tanks'...once you've flushed them, what's left to worry about?

Ever dump and sensors read it’s still full? Of course you have.

I guess you need to remember that the marketing folks will sell you anything they can: regardless of the actual need for it.

That's what the flush is for, to clean the sensors.

The sensors WILL stop working at some point. Don't get too attached to them.

One of the issues with RV ‘s thats a PIA. Yes, marketing is nothing to do with truth and more about creativity.
Latest craze.

About those pesky sensors...
The Missus and I have our own method of how to keep them functioning properly...
I wasn't going to share this........ I know EXACTLY how it will sound!
(Some background)
We travel with our five pound Pomeranian, and she does what all dogs do: she keeps us limber, by having us bending over to pick up her... debris!
The result of this, is that we always have a supply of "poop-bags" on hand.
Sooo...
We don't put anything but processed food and drink down into the black tank. Everything else goes into a bag, and is then taken to the nearest garbage receptacle.
This tactic won't work for everybody, and it will probably make a few of you nauseous
: but it has worked successfully for us for a number of years now.
...Just sayin'...

I agree - putting paper in the trash vs the turlet is probably best. Have to do that in a lot of the LA countries I travel to.
But - that’s not something Ms. WT would be open to!

In our case: she's the one who suggested it!

Weary Traveler, you asked about the product RV Digest-It. I have RVing friends who use that product and swear by it. They wouldn't use anything else. I just purchased a small bottle to give it a try, but haven't used it yet.

Your tanks should get cleaned when you sanitize the fresh water system once or twice a year by running the solution through all faucets and toilet. Let it sit in the tanks for awhile and all is well.
However, for this to work you do have to sanitize the system with bleach.

Yeah... They work: but they cost money...
My sensors work just fine, and it costs MUCH less.

I haven't looked to see if my sensors are internal or external but the system gives me both a graphical representation and capacity percent. It works through the Vega Touch Mira app as well so I can see my tank levels as I am draining or flushing.
Does anyone know if See Level is compatible with Firefly or other automated control systems? According to Garnet's website the SeeLevel II which was RVC is discontinued.

I hope that it doesn't show you what's floating IN the tank...

Prior to replacing my old plastic toilet with a porcelain toilet I drained the black tank and flushed it with one of those flexible wands. After that I filled the tank about 3/4 full with water and dropped five dish washer soap pads in there and drove around for about 30 miles to slush things around.
Then I filled it up all the way as well and drained it. Looked kind of brownish so I repeated the procedure one more time and the water came out pretty much clear. I did it because I didn't want to stink up the entire RV while changing toilets. I can open the toilet valve now and don't smell anything. I also added the same soap to the grey tank.
I would consider that tank maintenance and will keep doing that at least every third time I dump tanks.

My black and gray monitors are opposite! It took a while to figure this out. My black (actually gray on the monitor) almost always shows full even tho I rinse with the wand. Last trip I put ice and Dawn dishwashing liquid in the tank with a little water on the way home and I think it helped some. My monitoring just goes by the mental four-five days on the black. Leave the gray valve open until the day before I empty the black. I will try the Dishwashing pods -that sounds like a good idea.
