Pets - Securing them when travelling

How do you secure your pets while travelling?

Since our dog likes to ride between the front seats I purchased 2 seat belt extenders and attached them to the front seat pedestals. I can now use Marta's harness and restraint system and hook her into her own seat belt up front.

Tired of the trial and error results I was having going through pet stores I ordered the extenders from Seat Belt Extender Pros and they work better than expected.

Here is the web site if anyone is interested.

Never secured any of our dogs over the years for travel -- I figured it wouldn't make much difference in a crash. They were free to move around as they wanted although they normally stayed very close. Between front seats was popular in winter due to engine warmth, or on couch just behind driver where the view was better.

If you are traveling in New Jersey it is illegal to have an unsecured pet. They must be in a crate or tethered. We also use a harness with a tether whether in a motorhome or a vehicle. Most of the states have legislation pending to require this. Think about it, a cute 35lb dog becomes a projectile in a crash.

Label/tag those pets

My wife came across a tip on another forum. Get some of those cardboard key tags, the round ones, and place your campsite number on the tag when you arrive at a campground and then tie the tag to the pet's collar. That way if for some unknown reason the pet gets loose and starts wandering whoever finds it will know which site you are at. You can purchase the tags at office supply stores or at an arts and crafts store if you want less than "too many".

Found a use for the overhead bunk

We found a use for the overhead bunk. It will become an indoor kitty walk while parked at a campground. When setup it will provide the kittens with a view of the outside while keeping them controlled.

My wife purchased a kitty walk from Amazon and when assembled it fits on the overhead bunk. Since this will be the first trip ever with cats we are going to give it a try.

Sleepypod harness

Henry has a Sleepypod clickit-sport harness that he seems to really like. All of my dogs have used this brand and seemed very comfortable. It is the only one I found that has passed crash tests. In the MH he rides on the loveseat with the lap belt through the straps in the back of the harness. Shoulder belt provides the same in a car. I feel better knowing he is secured in event of an accident and it keeps him from coming to visit me while driving. Henry is a 65 lb golden retriever who would be right next to me in the cab if not secured.

We also have the Sleepypod clickit-sport for our pitt. It works great since he would just as soon be on the couch anyway.

Three little kittens all in a row

On our current outing we took all three kittens, as well as the dog.

With the slides in we are able to secure three crates under the dinette table. Doing this we had all three kittens in view, controlled and in a position to where we did not need a radio the entire trip. They sing relatively well together.

Kitten sleeping quarters

Turned the overhead bunk into the sleeping quarters for the kittens. They sleep in their crates (kitty prison) at night and then get pardoned for good behavior in the morning.

It appears as if you have them all under control but knowing cats as I do; I sincerely doubt it.

cats under control ????

KC is 1 1/2 yrs old and when at home runs all the time...he is so athletic, he has had a difficult time adjusting to RV travel. While on the road, he sleeps in his 'tube' under a blanket. He emerges when we are parked and setup. When we go to bed, he is up most of the night climbing up into HIS bunk...jumping from one bed to the other and who knows what else.
He moves from one window to the other making sure he knows what is going on outside !

This is one of his favorite hang outs...at home and rv ...

He looks comfy. And probably wondering, "What are you doing for me next?"

Like his stuffed toys.

We can't get up the nerve to take our 2 felines with us camping. Treasure our peace of mind and sleep too much.

One of ours had an asthma attack and we were at an animal hospital until midnight Sunday. Luckily our primary vet at home is a 24 hour emergency center as well so we called them and they provided us the contact info for a vet in Winston-Salem and called ahead for us. Everything worked out fine and the little guy is doing well. Turns out the receptionist at the W-S clinic used to work for our vet so the communication flow was outstanding.

Lesson learned, always know where the closest animal emergency center is located.

Probably some anxious times there. Glad it turned out well for him/her and y'all.

All vet services should have a 24 hour emergency service and especially on weekends when the office is usually closed after noon on Saturdays. But unfortunately, very few do.

The statutes that prevent the transporting of animals in an inhumane or cruel manner were being loosely interpreted by some in NJ. They have since backed off. As far as I know only a handful of states require a dog to be crated or tethered when being transported in an open cargo area. ie: back of an open pickup truck bed. Your biggest risk from a LEO would be for distracted driving if the pet was interfering with your control or attention. As far as NJ here is there update:
New Jersey SPCA backtracks on animal restraint enforcement

Heck most states don't even require adult seat belt use for back seat passengers. Not saying it's smart but just for once the government isn't passing laws to protect us from ourselves.
