Tools, so many tools

So, as I am downsizing, part of the process is going through my extensive tool collection that has taken me years to acquire, turns out, I am truly my father's daughter. LOL

SO now I ask you experienced folks, hand or air, what are your MUST HAVES ? And GO...

It's always fun: trying to figure out what should be in your toolbox...
I carry four items:
WD-40 for when it doesn't move; but should
Gorilla Flue: For when it does move; but shuldn't
Vise Grips: the best hammer I ever used

and...

A Platinum MasterCard!

Well my problem is I must have a little of everything.

Nothing worse (IMO) than you on the road but you need a tool or a socket (even if its something that can wait until I get home). I like to do most everything my self. Its more of a time saving thing than a money thing (I hate waiting on someone to fix something that I can do myself and do it better most of the time).

So I have just about everything you could want or need for the RV inside and out. Full set of sockets, wrenches, cuters, plyers, strippers, 10 diff screw drivers. Also including bailing wire, zip ties, assorted DC wiring and connectors, fuses, plumbing stuff, AC electrical stuff, multi meter, tape.... you get the idea.

So my list of "must have" is much larger than the average bear.

But I suppose a small socket set and some hand tools would do for most folks. You can alway add to your tools as you see fit.

I feel that the best way to answer this is to more or less copy whatever tools you use at home, excluding special projects (such as remodeling, building furniture, or whatever it is you do for a hobby or necessity). Just the basic things you find handy around the house.
I say this because it really is a personal ability thing really. Why should a completely tool-illiterate non-handy person carry extensive tools?

I recon almost everyone would want basic screwdrivers for changing batteries in remotes and toys, or whatever... beyond that though...

For me, I keep a small-ish tool bag at home. screwdrivers, a complete compliment of pliers (linesman, wire stripper, needle nose, channel locks, different sizes, diagonal cutters, etc...), micro screw driver set, digital mutimeter, electric outlet tester, hammer, utility knife, utility scissors, a few basic box end and adjustable wrenches, some chisels, a nail set, putty knife or two, a small hacksaw, tape, wire nuts, IR thermometer, cordless drill/driver and bit set, a speed square, and more...I even have a romex stripper I tend to keep in there even though it's not an oft used thing. It's my go bag I can tote to where I need to work on something.

I used to just grab that bag and load it in the RV for every trip. I used a lot of that stuff early on when I was chasing through the factory errors and doing a bit of "modding" type projects. Use of course tapered down to once in a while... almost never
Still, I eventually just duplicated that tool bag for the RV. Much of it is much cheaper stuff, some even from harbor freight.

Personally, beyond a few combination wrenches I don't have anything really for the automotive mechanical side of things....no sockets, etc...
I also don't have much in the way of plumbing tools, except for the channel lock pliers.

An auto mechanic on the other hand might want to bring along sockets, jacks, and all sorts of other specialty tools for what they know and do...
An electrician on the other hand would prob bring a much more substantial set of electrical type things.

I've found you can always buy a tool on the road if you need to....

I have two of these...one is a tool bag, the other is a med kit. If it doesn't fit in here I'll buy it along the way or pay someone to fix it. Tools are heavy. If you are good at making chicken salad from chicken poop, carry tapes, wire ties, etc. Amazing what you can do when you have no other choices.

I agree here and pretty much what I have done for tools, including two enerpac jacks and a pump.

I'm not sure I'm clear on where these tools are for? Are you talking about what you should carry with you on the road or what you have at home? "Air" tools threw me off, if you're carrying air tools on the road with you I'm impressed!

It obviously also depends on what you do, or what you're willing to do. Carrying a ton of tools in your RV but you'd rather not lay on your back on the side of the freeway fixing something doesn't really make sense. Carry what you're comfortable using vs. calling for help or taking it in somewhere. I carry a lot of tools on the road, but I'm also ok with having to change a leaking exhaust manifold gasket in a grocery store parking lot if I had to. (been there-done that)

Let us know exactly what you're doing and we can give better advice. Here's my range of tools... (lol. I have been a mechanic for a living since I was 13.) First shots are a couple of my shop at home and last shots are what I carry in our Vegas. Look closely at what's in the drawers of the Vegas tool box, you might see something you should be carrying but aren't. Again, things like a tire plug kit are stupid to carry if you'd rather just call or get a tow, which is perfectly fine btw.

I hate waiting for help so I will always "try" to fix stuff myself first.

Plus think of it this way. What if your on the road, no cell signal or the roadside service you called is 5 + hours out.... but someone stops to help you.... and THEY dont have any tools.

Well if you have a good assortment on board ....most of the easy stuff can be fixed or new parts replaced on the spot with YOUR tools.

But I agree.... I dont need all the tools and supplies I have on board.... I just like to have them. Makes me feel good? LOL

Plus Im the kinda of guy if I dont carrier the tools I think need .....then something comes up down the road and I need to fix something and I dont have the proper tools.... I will be kicking myself saying "Why didnt I bring my socket set". Its not a money thing ... more of a time thing or a macho pride of fixing everything myself. "Me man.... I make fire.... Fire good".

GM Tech has my dream garage. I want tools that I dont even know how to use and would never use them. LOL

They are just nice to have and play with. LOL

Im sure GMtech is the same way I am. Why call for help when I can fix it myself in 30 min or an hour.

I think GM Tech missed a tool in there...right there in that drawer behind the other tool--see something missing.

Long and Winding... I get what you mean about it's a "time thing". For me, it's maybe even more than time an "aggravation thing". I hate eating up 1/2 a day or more shuttling back and forth to a shop, sitting waiting on it, etc...

GM tech, the first picture of your large drawer tool box made me think of a guy over on another forum I frequent. He has what you need.
Behind his big diesel pusher he tows...well I think he sold it .... so he towed a stacker trailer. He had a toolbox almost that size, full on work bench, a parts warehouse, full size compressor, and all sorts of stuff...along with a golf cart and a car. He isn't a racer, just a handy guy that likes to help others

I’ve always been of the opinion that the most important tool you can take with you is the one between your ears...

My Compass has limited storage space, so I have a small standard toolbox with screwdrivers, hammer, assorted pliers (regular/needle nose/channel lock/vise grips), tape measure, wirecutter/stripper, small socket set, utility knife, spare fuses, electrical tape, digital multimeter, outlet tester, etc.

But I also carry my “MacGyver” kit, with Gorilla tape, gorilla glue, WD-40, cable ties, a pop-rivet tool and assorted rivets (great for mounting things on those thin walls), pipe cleaners, epoxy putty stick, glue gun, small butane torch lighter, rubber bands, paper clips, wire, assorted screws/washers/nails, gasket material, and some Command strips and hooks, parachute cord, bungee cords, velcro ties, and a tube of Goop.

Just enough to get me into (and hopefully out of) trouble!

Forgot that I also have a small electrical testing kit with multimeter, outlet tester, and noncontact voltage tester...picked it up at Walmart for cheap, comes in a small case and doesn’t take up any space....
