When I started pulling a popup behind my trike I found I needed more tools than the motorcycle tool kit I carried. So, I got a canvas tool bag at HF and dedicated it to the popup. When the GF got a Lil Guy TT I had to get a larger bag AND more tools.

When I got the Vegas I started adding tools then said to myself, "Self you don't need anymore tools. You got duplicates all over the place". A little later, fortunately for me (or unfortunately) my tools were out of the trailer for winter cleaning and "went under" during Hurricane Florence. Brackish saltwater is not good for your tools.

Started from scratch to refurbish the Vegas tools. This time I got the standard 113 piece HF toolkit for the Vegas and just added a few things to a canvas tool bag - tapes, Gorilla glue, wiring connects, small spools of wire, extra long BIC-type fire starters, etc.

Think I got most everything I need for a road trip that fits in the tool kit and canvas bag. If I don't then it's time to pull out the plastic.

My most used tools in the RV:
  • A screwdriver set with multiple drivers (including that square head one that seems to be every screw in the RV)
  • A Leatherman Wingman multi-tool. Use this guy for anything that the screwdriver can't

I do carry a small toolbox in the back with some other stuff (rubber mallet, various pliers, voltmeter, sockets, hatchet, etc.). I rarely if ever crack that guy open when camping--unless I really really need that mallet.

Like Calman, I carry a HarFrt basic tool set, plus a tool bag with some extras. I have found that I am needing less tools as the years roll by. Yes, the HarFrt tools are cheap crap, but good enough for quick fixes.
Before our next big trip, I will be pulling everything out of the storage bays and rethinking what needs to go. Need to put the Vegas on a diet and lose a few pounds!

How much I carry depends on the trip length...
Many more tools for the 3+ months away versus the weekend.
A core set of tools stays in the RV of course - socket set, hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, wire stippers, etc.. screws and hardware.
For long trips I've added dremel tools, cordless screwdrivers, etc...
But then always the opportunity to buy a new tool for a project. DW wanted some additional shelves in the RV on our first snowbird trip - I didn't have a saw... Now have a dremel saw max in the inventory.
One those 3 month trips I was very near the GVWR... Just more stuff in general - but certainly more tools.

For everyone, tools are a must...for a few, they are a genuine hobby. People that make a good living with them will carry a plethora and proud to do so. I like camping next to those people!! Others like me that hate having to use them will carry few, but enough to get out of the ruts.

Add a couple of those "airline bottles" to the tool bag for the times you feel like screaming..."help...I got it fixed but I can't get up".

Changing a tire

Had a blowout in rural USA with old RV. Road service sent a guy that did not have the correct size tools. Manufacturer supplied tool broke. Today, for our Outlaw, we have the correct tools to remove not only the lug nuts, but the valve extenders, etc. Check out your equipment and plan ahead. We wont change a tire on our own, but installed a spare in the garage, under the tool cabinet (had to raise the cabinet a few inches higher). We like the peace of mind in knowing that the correct tire is nearby.

One of our Insureds lost a front tire down South: it blew all of the left front corner of the bodywork off his rig!
The fella that cane to replace it; put an 8-ply tire on, in place of his 12-ply blow-out...

He went less than 75 miles, before Déjà vu reared it's ugly head...

FWIW, for those of you that carry a spare AND would actually want to change a wheel on the road, this Makita impact will make it a LOT easier.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CA04RH4...language=en_US

I have a couple of these and carry one in my Vegas. It would take a 4 foot breaker bar to break loose lugnuts after tightening them with this impact. It's strong! It will absolutely break loose and tighten most any automotive/rv lugnuts, probably better than most people would because it's constant over all the nuts. And if you don't have at least a 3 or 4 foot breaker bar, you're not getting your rv lugnuts tight enough anyway.

We've talked on here lately about towing safety, having one of these to check and tighten hitch bolts and hitch ball nuts is a HUGE safety item in my opinion. Honestly, how many of you towing something have made sure your hitch ball is torqued to at least 250ft/lbs, and some even up to 450ft/lbs? Hit that nut with one of these Makita impacts and although it's not a torque wrench (which you might not even have), it's tighter than you're probably going to get it by hand and it's not so tight it's gonna snap or strip. (Highly unlikely.)

I've wondered about those! I have lots of tools including the high impact "black sockets" and the air impact wrench...too much weight plus you need a compressor. This will actually break loose the RV nuts, huh? I'm gonna pull a trailer with the Jeep and could easily toss a spare tire and wheel under the Jeep, bolted to the trailer bed. Nice option.

Not sure that Amazon link is working? Here's the Makita link.

https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/XWT08Z

This is for tool only, if you don't have any Makita stuff already you'd have to buy a battery and charger too.

And yes, it will break loose most any rv lugnut, even big class A's. Unless you have a name brand, high torque air impact and are running a good high volume air supply at 150psi, this battery powered impact will absolutely be stronger. There's no air compressor/air impact combo that you'd carry in an RV that would put out the torque this tool does.
