Up and Down the East Coast

Looking at a short RV trip from Daytona Beach to Middletown NJ and thinking about bypassing Washington and Baltimore. Have several choices and looking for input as to how much further (time and distance) and desirability this alternative routing is. I see my choices as I95-26-77-81-276: I95-64-81-276: I95-64-Cheasapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel-Rt13-I95.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just came back from Disney World driving to Orange County N.Y.
Took I95-26-77-81-84, no tolls, little traffic compared to I95. It was a little bit longer, but much less of a chance getting stuck in traffic.

Thanks for the info. Any advice/recommendations on where you stopped.... and how long (days) was the trip back?

If you go up US-17 to grab I-64 north be aware that the new high rise bridge over the Elizabeth River south of Portsmouth, VA now a Toll Bridge. Was up there first time in months and recently got a letter from City of Chesapeake with bill for $3.05 as I do not have a EZ-Pass account. Didn't know of the change as there is no Toll Booth. Otherwise it would have been a $1.00 charge.

Orlando to Upstate New York is 1200 miles give or take a few, about 9 hours each day driving about 60-62 mph.

East Coast

We live in S. E. Virginia and RV ourselves around the east coast regularly for 3, or 4 day weekends. Once north of North Carolina, we avoid the 'inland routes', particularly I-95, like the plague. Two hour traffic jams are SOP anywhere north of Richmond. DC or Baltimore? Get the gun. You hit on it with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Route 13. Traveling the eastern shore of Va, Md, & De is unique, and a traffic breeze compared to inland routes. Depending on your time element, and destination, consider coming off of 13 onto 113 to Lewes, Delaware, and catch the Lewes / May ferry to Cape May, NJ. Not only is the 1.5 hour ride neat, but [Victorian]Cape May is about as nice as it gets. Also on 113 is unique Berlin, Md, and Rehoboth & Bethany beach cities in Delaware. Happy Travels!

If you take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel, remember to stop and close your LP tank valve. It's a required safety element to traveling the tunnel.

Related advice...make you reservations!! The amount of RV's out there right now is amazing. We just got back from a 12 day, 2 weekends of weddings and every campground we stayed at was booked. Now that school is out...it's nuts!! People are getting out this year more than ever!! The Palmetto RV Resort we stayed for 2 days near I-26 and I-95 (16 miles N of 26 on 95-Lake Marion) was really nice and has a great restaurant next door. Wide spaces, nice shade trees, lots of well-managed kids, strict rules...good stop!

I agree... We waited too late to book any place for Labor Day, and were lucky to find something for Columbus Day weekend...
From now on: we'll be looking for places at least a full year in advance.

Perhaps some of these Golf Courses should be converted into RV Parks: there's too many of them out there, and they take up too much space anyway!
