DVR Solutions

I'm dumping DirecTV due to the expense (~$120/mo). It has clear utility/advantages while on the road and does provide a nice picture, but the cost is too high.

I'm looking for a DVR solution to take a few recordings (~100hrs) on the road. At home I have embraced the Amazon Fire product line and have plenty of wireless bandwidth to connect from the RV itself (while in the driveway).

The obvious (Tivo) is promissing, but I don't have the where-with-all to sort out connection options. Frankly, I think the solution is easy, i just can't see the forrest.

Can someone detail their solutions?

We've used a Tablo box at home for OTA and DVR for about 7 years now. We use Tablo Connect to remote into the box at home when on the road... usually to watch college football. No VPN needed because you're getting the feed from your home network.

It could be configured with Plex server, but we don't watch enough TV on the road to make that worthwhile.

Not so. The stand-alone DVR has been superseded by the online DVRs mostly due to copyright issues.

There are ways to download movies/TV shows to laptops/tablets for remote viewing later but they are either very complicated or require a subscription service like Netflix and maybe Amazon? There may be others.

I use Prism by NCH or EaseUS RecExperts to record streaming videos for later viewing. It takes a large hard to record very much in 1080P or 4K. My HP laptop with a 4T SSD works fine. A USB remote and a HDMI cable to the TV makes viewing from the laptop easy. Of course you can always cast the laptop to the TV, but I find the HDMI cable works better. If you use an external USB HD, be sure the laptop and HD use a USB 3.0 ports. It also helps to have a dedicated GPU in the laptop if you are recording a lot of fast action.
