A/C just took a dump

The main A/C is blowing hot air. Fan and compressor run. Dometic and local shop say it needs to be replaced because it lost its freon. Kinda disappointing on a 14 month old unit. Local shop will order one on Monday, and I will pay for over night shipping so we can leave for the summer on time. What a PITA. Took the rig out of storage on 5/1, but didn't need a/c till yesterday. I should have known better and tested everything the day I brought it home...

Sorry to hear that. BIG reason I went with 3 AC's.

I don't understand why an AC unit can't be recharged with freon similar to an automobile or truck. Friends of ours had one of their AC units quit last season, they were told the unit had to be replaced too. Lucky for them their Holiday Rambler (MH) was still under warranty.

How long is the Dometic warranty?

I have been told that most if not all of the roof top AC's, are factory sealed, and have no way to add Freon, if they leak. Seems to me a cheap way to build them, though it probably does keep their sales of replacement units up. Fortunately they don't fail too often, though the failures I have had, not on dometic, have been the starting capacitor.

I believe the Dometic warranty is three years.

Makes sense Laco, it's just too bad they can't build in a re-charge point like other industries do. Repair the leak point and re-charge. But you have a strong point, why not just sell another AC unit and install?

Is the unit getting replaced under Dometics warranty?

I replaced one on our Avion and I believe the new one had a 3 year warranty.

The roof top can be recharged even if they are sealed from the factory. The lines can be cut and and fittings soldered on to allow recharging. I've had two home refrigerators and one rooftop Rv AC done, so I know it is doable, you just have to find a good tech. Plus you need to find the leak.

Dave if it wasn't under warranty I would try that. The refer unit on our sailboat was sealed and I had a tec add the port find the leak and re charge.

That's what I'm talking about. Why don't they design re-charge ports in the first place? OR are they THAT confident that their units aren't going to fail (leak)? I get it, once it leaks the trouble is finding the leak and securing it and then you can go ahead with recharging the freon.

Sorry, reread the posts and saw it was still under warranty. I would have the unit replaced too! I should have read more closely!

How do you run 3 ac's? I suppose on a 50 amp plug you could but shut everything else off? In a state park near my daughter they only have 30 amp plug in's and I'm pulling about 30 amps running two ac's. I designed a separate plug to use in the 20 amp plug on the pole that runs my convertor, refrigerator and our extra freezer. Works good.

Our AC died on us last month, paperwork was submitted (then resubmitted), approved, parts were ordered and it is being replaced under warranty this coming Friday.
A tech did say a good AC shop can find the leak and install the needed valves for refilling...something for down the road if ever it happens again and we are out of warranty.

The problem is the techs charge anywhere from 80 to 100 an hour. After a couple hours and parts you are getting close to the price of a unit. Especially if tracking down a leak.

We lost the Zone 1 (main living area) Dometic A/C on our Mobile Suites Easter weekend. The compressor locked up. Fortunately, I would was able to get it replaced before our trip out west. We're at Las Vegas KOA at Sam's Town, and both A/C units are working fine.

Oldbird, 50 amp service is 240 volts with two 120 volt legs. In reality, you have 100 Amps of 120 volt power available. You can easily run 3 AC units and pretty much everything else in your unit with that much power available.

Your 30 amp plug is 120 volts at 30 Amos so you basically have 30% of the power that a 50 amp service provides.

I have no problem running 3 AC's along with Residential frig and electric WH. 50A on each leg allows for a lot of consumption. If you buy or order from Rolling Retreats every RV will have 3 AC's.

Maybe I don't get out enough () but where I'm at in Patagonia, AZ there is a Landmark 5er besides me. He has a 50 amp cord hocked up AND a 30 amp cord hocked up. He has three ac's and both him and the owner of this campsite never heard of 100 amps coming off of a 50 amp plug. I'm not arguing with you guys, just wondering. I do just fine with my 50 amp service and autoformer until I get into a state park with only a 30 amp. I also understand how a 240 service can split into two 120's and feed different curcuits 120. I guess I'm just trying to understand why they just don't call it a 100 amp plugin instead of a 50 amp plugin?

It's very simple. Look at the shore power plug. You have 4 terminals - L1, L2, N and G. Each of the 2 hot legs can provide up to 50 amps. Want proof? Look at the power pedestal and you'll find that the 50 amp receptacle is protected by 2 linked 50 amp breakers. Therefore, 50 amp service can provide 120 volts x 50 amps/hot leg x 2 hot legs = 12,000 watts.

30 amp service, on the other hand, has only 1 hot leg. Therefore, it can provide 120 volts x 30 amps/hot leg x 1 hot leg = 3,600 watts.
