convertor going bad?

My convertor is charging and the batteries are staying topped off but it doesn't charge in a steady charge. It turns off and then back on, is this normal? Its not to noticeable until I run my generator then you can hear the generator rev up and down. Its old and probably needs replaced. What's a good one nowadays?

There's a couple reasons for the converter to run constantly;
You're running several 12 volt items particularly the furnace fan draws lots of juice.
Your batteries are on their last leg & the converter is working overtime to keep them maintained. How old are the batteries? If near 5 years its probably time for replacements. Have them load tested at an auto parts store.
Or as you say possibly the converter. On a 12-13 year old rv that's a very good possibility. Could be the cooling fan is covered in dust so running louder.

It is normal for the converter to apparently turn on and off. Actually it is switching between different levels of charging. After your batteries are fully charged it will back of to a maintenance or float level and then ramp back up when needed. Which will depend on the load and the condition of your batteries. If the batteries are staying charged I wouldn’t worry about it.

I would agree.

I can't imagine your generator is reving because of a converter charging unless it's a very small inverter generator on ECO mode.

Danny, I have four good batteries just wondering about the convertor. I think Pete nailed it and I realize now the 'ramping back up' is what I'm experiencing. Thanks, that answers my question.
