Diesel Genny

I am looking at a DRV and the seller stated it has an 8K "diesel" genny. I can't say that I have ever heard of that. Propane yes, and gas on a toy hauler yes, but never diesel on a 5th wheel. There would need to be a fuel tank on the camper, and I believe a fuel filter would be needed. This may be a normal thing, but jusy odd to me. Comments?
Thanks

I have seen a DRV advertisement video that said they can add generator options with propane, gas and diesel from 5500W - 10000W

Oman makes a very reliable 8k diesel generator. If it was serviced and exercised correctly It should be trouble free depending on age.

My generator is an 8kw diesel. Mine is 2 years old with over 500 hours.

DRV no longer will add the diesel.

I ordered our trailer with the 8KW diesel, it is an inverter genny, variable speed, also water cooled.

The enclosure and front baggage door are larger than normal.
I had it shipped with fuel tank loose and had a custom aluminum tank made. Also added a water separator filter.

Besides cost the negative is you know you have a diesel, it’s no tier 4 and you are aware it is diesel fueled

We had an Onan 8k diesel generator in our diesel pusher we owned for 14 years and traveled 115,000 miles in. We ran it anytime we were on the road and it never gave any trouble. We only changed the fluid and filters.

My Tuscany has a diesel generator. Love it, never had any issues with it. It seems very quiet. Can't hardly tell it's running from inside.

I'll take a diesel powered anything over gasoline or propane powered.

I don’t know if DRV will install diesel generators today. I did have them install a gasoline generator in my 5’er because I dry camp a lot and I can always get gasoline easily, any time day or night. DRV installed a 14 gal marine tank in the belly with ventilation and charcoal filters. I’ve been pleased. My unit is a 2016 model.

I had ordered my 2022 40kssb4 with a diesel generator how ever the new compartment configuration would not accommodate the diesel gen. I had to go with a 7000 watt gas gen with a 30 gal gas tank installed at the rear of the 5er. It works great.

Actually, the old compartment would not accommodate a diesel gen or a diesel gen and 3K inverter option.

In that situation engineering already has the capability to change the blue prints of the front compartment and side walls to accommodate the bigger gen and inverter.

I’m happy with it although it could be a bit cleaner burning. It does stink a bit.

You can easily extend your exhaust above the roofline.

Just a thought, how old is the fuel?

I have a Genturi, good for longer stays but I don’t use it when solo or shorter run times.
Even with a Genturi it’s not 100% of the exhaust above and away. At best I would guess these are Tier 2 diesels.

I would take a diesel generator if I could get one in a toy hauler. I saw a custom install in a Vanleigh Beacon 5th wheel on their FB page. He had the fuel cell in the front near the generator. Seems like a lot of extra pin weight between the extra weight of the diesel Onan and the fuel cell. I could see it working better in a toy hauler with the fuel cell to the rear. Still they weigh a 130 pounds more than a gas. We have a 10K now in my current Mountain Aire, but will be selling it soon. It's been my bailout pad a few times when the power went off. I always had the tank full and it gave me about 120 usable gallons if needed. It has the same engine as my 26 HP Kubota tractor and uses some of the same filters.

Diesel Gen

I just went to Texas for 3 weeks in the horribly hot weather (over 100 for a week) . Ran the diesel generator all the way there and back from northern Indiana to the TexMex border to power the roof AC’s at about 1/2 gallon an hour. Way worth it. In my rig the generator is under the front end and you can’t hardly tell it’s running from inside the coach. Quiet, efficient diesel power, love it!
