Dish Traveler
Does anyone have the Dish Traveler satellite dish installed on your fifth wheel and who did the install? Also, was location a factor in the placement of the dish?
Getting ready to pull the plug on one and need some advice.
Thanks in advance!

Why have it mounted on your roof? I have read that a lot of people prefer something like a tailgater set up. It gives you flexibility on where the dish can be. As a portion of the time you are parked under trees where a roof mounted set up becomes useless. Plus there are less holes in your roof. Best of luck which ever way you decide to go.

I would really like it on the roof and with this unit, there is less to configure, it get's all the satellites, HD capable and you can use a DVR.
Was just wondering if anyone had already attached one and any tips/concerns of the install.

Dish no. But I do have a DirecTv Travler installed. The process is identical for either unit. Ours is installed on the forward part of the roof if front of the bathroom vent. The hardest part is getting the antenna up on the roof. If you have it done, it should run you no more than about $300 to $400 for labor. All of the cabling is already installed so it won't take long for someone who knows what they are doing. Any mobile satellite installer can do the job.

Yep, have one on our Suites--it is placed just forward of the shower skylight. We went with it because it most resembles our previous Dish home setup--all satellites/HD/watch, record on both TVs/record up to 16 programs at same time.
We had an A/V specialist out of Dallas area do the install--recommended by an RV service center. He did an excellent job, and my wife is a happy camper.
Recently had a cable on the roof go bad and Winegard found it for me over the phone.
Don't know what else to say...I can send a pic to you of the roof area if you will contact me by email--joedobry@gmail.com

I have the Traveler 1000 and did the install my self, not hard. I also have a tailgater that can get three satellites in HD but its not dual head of course. I installed mine at the rear and installed a RV datasat 840 internet sat in the middle on the level part of the roof. If I don't have cell coverage I'm online, its great. I guess I'm spoiled, lol.

I have the Dish Traveler on my 15 38rSSA installed on the roof. Excellent piece of kit. It is installed forward and on the driver side next to the bathroom vent where the cabling is located. Make sure you leave enough room for the feed horn to rotate completely around about 6 inches from the roof because that's what the antenna does when it is in a new location and searching for a signal. It will clear the standard vent covers but if you have the rain covers over the standard cover than it could be a problem.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have been up on the roof multiple times and don't see any cable for the satellite. Are the cables located under the roof when you remove the vent up front for the bedroom? That would be great if this is the case.

I’m not sure if all DRVs come prepped for the satellite dish or not. Mine was and the cabling is located in the insulation under neath a drain vent cap on the off door side about midway front to back. While on the roof, remove a vent cap and if all you see is insulation, then that is where the cabling is located. You will have to fish around in the insulation to find it. If yours was prepped for solar, there will be a similar cap (insulation visible) near the front of the roof. The cabling for the satellite control box should be in the “coat” closet. It is plug and go. This is based on our 2016 39DRBS3, but I think this applies to all DRVs.
We had Slade at Rolling Retreats install our satellite and are very happy with it.
Good luck...John

I've installed several for myself and others. Simple and easy. Takes less than 2 hrs start to finish. The cabling will be under one of the fake roof vents toward the middle of the trailer. All drv's come from the factory pre wired. Most dealers want 3-4 hundred to install for some reason. What a rip off. Good luck

Well, made it over to where we have the fifth wheel stored and took this photo. Looks like we have satellite wires, as this is the terminal for the power box on the dish. I spoke with Greg at DRV and he was tremendous help and patients! He even said that we should have solar wire run up to the top as well. It will be located in the front round cap vent. Looks like they will all need replacing anyway, as the first one I removed, fell apart! New ones coming in Saturday!

Joe, where did your Hopper and Joey? Do you own them or did you get them direct from Dish? I'm ready to fire DirecTv and convert my traveler to Dish. DirecTv is just getting to be a PITA since AT&T is running the show.

Mike,
Hopper 3/Joey from Dish; Sat/baseplate/DPH42 switch from Amazon.
Most of this is available from Camping World--check pricing.
I am no good at this stuff, so had a local A/V/Sat tech in Dallas area do the entire job.
Was quoted $2700 for install when bought the Suites, but opted to continue using the Carryout. After going FT, found the Carryout falling short of needed options, thus going to the Travlr.
It does everything now we could do at the house, plus a lot more. The tech said the Hopper 3 is the most advanced DVR/receiver on the market that he knows of.
Good luck.
Have ATT everything else, that was main reason long ago to not go Direct.

Yes and thank you again for taking the time to send! Very helpful! Now on to fish the wires out from under the roof.

Just something to think about. I have done several Trav'ler installs and I always add the base plate under the satellite dish. I do this for a couple of reasons. One it spreads the weight of the dish out over a larger footprint. This probably isn't necessary, but it can't hurt. The other reason is the dish LNB has a roller that rolls on the roof when the dish is stowed. Without the base plate, this roller is rolling and bouncing (after stowing and while driving) on the rubber roof membrane. With the base plate, the roller rolls and stows on the metal baseplate. Here is a link to the base plate: https://amazon.com/Winegard-SKA-008-...ler+base+plate

Winegard also sells a roller landing pad.
On my last trailer I made my own out of a pieces of stainless kick plate I had from a door. Not even screwed down, just glued.
