Dually

Does anybody rotate their tires on their Dually trucks?

My Ford Dealer back in WI has done it a couple of times on my 2008 F-450 over the years. Two tires on the right rear go to the left side and vs versa.

Side to side is about it, every year for me.

I might go side to side since I have dually valves. But honestly, if I don’t see any wear patterns I’ll probably leave them alone.

Just the front or both axles?

Have had 4 Ford duallys--a 350 and 3 450s. Routinely try to rotate between 25-30k miles. Can be expensive, so any benefit if tread wear is normal, is questionable. Except for the 350 w/17s, have always gone at least 75k on a set. I only have had to replace tires when traction with the 19.5s was reduced, not because of wear bars showing.
If tires are looking good, side-side is probably enough, but lots of the 4x4s get shoulder wear on the front.

Ryan, on our RAMs the inner rear wheels are steel, the tires would have to be removed and re-mounted making it a PITA IMHO. I rotate the fronts on mine but I don't screw around with the rears. My rear tires are wearing very evenly so I don't feel the need to rotate. YMMV

Dan,
It is the same on Fords, + the alloy wheels are polished on only one side--meaning the front rims can only be on the front and the rear outers can only be in the outer position on the rears, IF you want the polished side to be outward. Steel rims on the inner position and the single polished sides on the others, make it expensive to rotate all the tires to different positions in a somewhat normal rotation pattern.

It was conventional wisdom that radial tires should always rotate(turn) in the same direction.

Dan, I did not opt for the Alloy wheels so I have all steel wheels. But from what I understand the inner rears can not be placed anywhere else but the rear inners.

False. Really the best rotation on a vehicle with 4 wheels is called a modified X rotation. After rotations every tire has been on every wheel location. So if you have a slight alignment issue it spreads it over all the tires instead of just 2 causing them to wear faster if you just did a front to back rotation.
Directional tires can not change direction.

Ryan, my experience is only with Fords, but any of the wheels can be at any of the positions, you could have the steel inner on the front and the outers on the front and the fronts in either position on the rears. Just wouldn't look pretty. What about the spare that is an all-steel wheel?

I do both axles=side to side. Only expense is a little sweat. Just lift up in shop, take off and put back on. A nickle to run air compressor.

Only the front for me. And only because even with good alignment they still wear a little different.

My first set of rear tires I had 72K on them when they were replaced. And at the time I only replaced because of the upcoming winter.

Yes, there are rotation models for including the spare. Really the best way to go as you will get rid of a tire with no mileage on it if you do not incorporate it.

I have owned two Dually trucks. With the newer RAM's I highly suggest getting the front aligned right out of the box. Have the toe set to 1/64-1/32. This will help with the front tire outer edge stepping.

Rotate ONLY the fronts side to side. They will need to break the tire from the wheel. Keep the wheels on the same side but move the tires side to side keeping the rotation the same. This means the inside will be on the outside after the swap.

Run 80psi if 4wd in fronts ALL the time and 65 rears if near full axle rating and if not towing for a while lower rears to 35.

Doing all the above WILL net you the most tire life with even tread wear.

Ryan, what I was asking about--if the steel wheels can only be used at the inner rears, what about the steel spare? It has to be able to be used at any position?

I have no FACTS other then my memory but a steel wheel Dually can have any wheel placed at any location including the spare.
