F450 Crew Cab or Regular Cab ????

I bought a 2017 Ford F350 DRW / 8 Foot Bed / Crew Cab a couple of years ago to pull my 40KSSB4. It does a great job on the highway in the Colorado mountains, and in/out of Phoenix.

However, the really poor turning radius, coupled with the length of an 8 Ft bed and crew cab make it very tough to get into/out-of our winter and summer RV lots we own. Both camps have pretty narrow roads, and it takes several back/wheel-cut/forward/wheel-cut/etc to get into either space.

We are thinking about ordering an F450 regular cab / 8 Ft bed to gain a better turning radius, along with a shorter truck.

What are your experiences parking your long trailers into tight spaces with a regular cab versus a crew cab?

What are your experiences parking your long trailers into tight spaces with a crew cab F350 versus a crew cab F450?

I'm committed to getting a Ford truck (as I can buy them at the right price), so getting a Dodge or Chevy (both good trucks I'm told) is out of the question for me.

I had a "14" Ram CC with the long bed I pulled our fifth wheel with. I had the Reese Sidewinder Hitch box that swiveled at the trailer rather than the 5th wheel hitch. Really made things easy. Cost about 600 bucks to replace the standard box and works with most any hitch. As for the straight truck I doubt there would be demand for it when it was time to replace and you would be giving up a lot of good space.

I for one really like the straight cabs but they have become a little unpractical for traveling for us. I also used the Reese Sidewinder on our "05" Ram short bed and its magic the way it works.

The 450 turns so much better then the 350 I won’t even consider less then 4 doors when I order my 2020. Maybe an extended cab over the crew cab, but not until I can see what we give up.

I’ve had full size 4 doors since 1999, would be hard going back.

I question that the main question to ask is, "How much do you need the extra space for passengers?"

Happy shopping!

I have had no issues parking my regular cab Ram 3500. I would think it helps being shorter for parking. There have been many times that my front bumper is close to a tree or another rig when backing in. I park far away mainly because of her hips are about line to line. But we do not drive the truck much as we also bring a Mazda 3 with us. Smaller but most importantly much better fuel economy. As stated the 450 will have a better turning radius. I think the 450 is de-tuned compared to the 350.

Ryan,
Only the Cab/Chassis are detuned, not the pickup. Believe this to be true of Ram 3500/4500 C/C.

F450 Crewcab

The only way to go is with the F450 Crewcab. The turning radius is awesome but the extra room with the 4 doors is great. Besides the 4 doors is the underseat storage. Make sure you get that. In my old superduty, 2008 F350 4 door, I used to carry a 4 drawer tool chest in the back. With the F450 I ordered the underseat storage and believe it or not I put everything from that tool box under the seat. You will be glad you got the crewcab. There is storage under both seats.

See attachment.

Good luck. Enjoy the road. We do.

Don

As another note, don't believe the 450 pickup comes in any form but a 4-door crew cab; other body styles available in the cab/chassis models.

Regular cab available in XT or XLT trim in the F450

I’m waiting for the 2020 order banks to open up and when they do it will be a crew cab 450

9 years now with a crew cab 350, don’t want to give up the rear passenger room even though 99.9% of the time the passengers are a couple of golden retrievers on a full platform bed.

The turning limitation I have found over the years acceptable, but there have been many many times I wish I had the wide front axle, so wide it will be on the next truck.

Cab size I don’t think would be much of an issue, it’s that wide track axle that makes all the difference.
