Hubcap removal

What tool have you used to remove the hubcaps (on new units)? I want to do it right the first time. Thanks.

HubCap removal

The unit should have come with a t-handle nut driver it is about 1" 1/2 or larger to fit over the 3 removable dress hubcap nuts they are evenly spread around the wheel. if you look close you will be able to tell which ones to remove. If no t-handle you can get a large wrench which will do the same but it costs about $8.
hope that helps

Thanks for your response, but I think we are thinking about different units (or years). What I need is the tool for a 2016 DRV Mobile Suites hubcaps.

I think I remember reading that some owners said that a brake spoon works good.

I have an old "hubcap" hammer (hook on one end and a rubber mallet opposite it) that I ground down to fit the slots in the hubcaps. I keep it in the basement. It looks like this:

Hubcap tool

It will also seat the hubcaps when you install them.

Tool

I just removed mine this week. I used a 6" small pry bar purchased at lowes. Get behind the cap where it attaches to the lug (I think it is four positions) look behind with a light and you will see them. Pry up. They come off hard but will come off. Hope this helps........Earl

I use a small 90º pry bar, but it does gouge up the back side of the plastic cap a little. If they're on right, they are real hard to get off. If they're not on right, they will fall off by themselves at the first bump. Don't ask me how I know this.

The best way to remove them without gouges is a lady foot pry bar. __________________

You can use a lady foot but the puller I linked above can have the width ground to match the slot. All you do is slide it in the slot, give a sharp tug and the hubcap will pop right off. You don't touch the wheel and just the edge of the slot so nothing is marked up. You can seat the hubcap retaining springs over 4 of the lugs and then use the rubber mallet to gently pop them back into place. Nice and easy...

YES with a rag behind it to protect the wheel.

Another thing you can use to protect the wheel is to cut open a 2 litter bottle and use the plastic as a guard. I used to use this when changing the ties on my motorcycle.

If you have the 9K axles, the covers are held on by machine screws that take a #2 square bit to remove.

That's the way mine are mounted on..... 2 screws holding it in place , #2 square bit to remove... does that mean I have 9K axles?

Jim

Look at the brake calipers. If they are on top of the disk (12 o'clock), then you have 9K IS. If the calipers are on the side of the disk, then you have 8K.

My 9K also have 9K written in white marker on the cross bar under the trailer, but that may or may not be there or may have worn off depending on how old your trailer is.
