Inverter

Since I have the 1000 watt inverter, is there any reason to have the converter plugged in? The inverter provides 4 stage charging which seems to me to be better without the use of the converter.

The converter takes 120VAC and converts it to 12VDC for use by various systems within the unit and to charge the house batteries. The inverter takes the 12VDC from the house batteries and coverts it to 120VAC for use by various systems within the coach. If the converter is not used the house batteries will eventually discharge and thereby no battery power will be available for the inverter's use.

If the your unit has an inverter/charger (combined unit) you can get by without the converter because the charging aspect of the inverter/charger will use the shore power to charge the house batteries.

This is a simple non technical response.

I realize how it works. And yes the inverter/ charger is a 4 stage charger. Just seems redundant to have the converter. Thought maybe I was missing something. Basically what caused me to realize this was thermostat problem. Erratic readings, 55 degrees in bedroom when actual was 80 degrees. Unplugged converter and problem was gone. I ran thermostat fused wire directly to battery which acts as a filter. Plugged converter in thermostat has been good since then.
Thanks for the reply.

In our 2015 RSB3, we also have a 1000 Magnum inverter. Within the first couple of days I noticed that the remote for the inverter was giving odd readings. What I found out was that the inverter AND the PD converter were both connected, allowing two chargers to operate at the same time. One of the SOITC forum members recommended unplugging the converter and letting the inverter charge the batteries. I believe that the inverter has a superior charging system, as in addition to the multiple charge levels, it also monitors the battery temperature. As soon as the two charging systems were not "fighting" with each other, the remote display for the Magnum settled down and displayed as expected.

Our MS didn't come with an inverter - RVs for Less added a 1500w PSW inverter at delivery. I don't know if the add-on inverter tries to charge the batteries along with the PD9280 or not. I haven't noticed any problems that might indicate a battle going on between the two, but I'm glad to have found this thread so I'm aware of the potential problem if electrical gremlins show up.

Hi Rusty, we realized there was an issue by looking at the inverter remote. The float light kept flickering constantly. As soon as I unified the converter it remained on streadily, unless it was in bulk charge mode.

Same here, unplugged converter 10 days ago and no more flashing light on inverter remote. Battery is staying charged. We are good to go. Converter is there if we ever need it because of failed inverter.

We don't have a DRV but we do have an inverter and a converter. The converter stays unplugged. We have a 2500 watt inverter/charger.

Just plug the inverter into the converter, and the converter into the inverter!
