Question about the roof

Sorry but this may seem like an odd question but I can not make up my mind. We have a 2018 38rssa with the 3/8" roof we also have have the tin round corners of the roof lifting. We are in Canada and can not get it back to the factory as they said the would replace the 3/8" as goodwill which I thought was very generous of them as we bought the unit used. The question is should I just repair the lifting corners on the roof or should I spend the extra and replace the plywood at the same time. Shipping the trailer to the factory would cost about as much, if not more, then replacing the roof here in Canada. My real question is do these trailers realy need a 1/2" roof.

Thanks Tim

If they are going to do it for free. Why not take them up on their offer? Make a road trip out of it. How do you know that you have the 3/8s roof decking?

Befoore you jump off the deep end be sure you are on the same page with the dealer. Replaceing the roof decking is a major, major, costly job. Not one for a company to do for a first owner much less a second. I'll be looking for the outcome of this. Keep use posted.

I had complete plans to go there, first was this week, second appointment October which I am going to have to cancel. The problem is I bet it would cost me about $5000 to drive there and back and I am not retired yet (so include time off of work). The biggest problem is I can not cross the border and who knows when that might happen.
As for the second question, the factory has a list of the trailers they did with the 3/8" roof. The most important is the fact that I actually measured it (took the skylight trim out).

LOL..Dealer, There are no actual DRV dealers near me and the trailer has to go back to the factory for this repair. Yes it is costly but so is taking it to the factory and so was the unit.

How bad is it?
DRV is well aware of the virus issues and if they are willing to offer to repair your roof, because it is the right thing to do, they should be flexible knowing about the border crossings.

People crossing the borders is an issue, can you meet at the border and have the trailer picked up?

DRV is run by Heartland people who have frequently made arrangements in the past to pick up and/or deliver trailers requiring extensive repairs.

I know, that is why I said make a trip of it, EH. I’m sure DRV is willing to push back there date because of the border situation.

They did quote me to pickup the trailer and return it but it did not seem like they were interested in me bringing it closer to them (but not across the border). The quote there and back was almost as much as replacing the roof on my dime so that also out at the moment.

Yes I have already pushed the date back once and will probably have to do it again. Maybe I can try for a year from now. I would just have to hope it is the same staff because I know things can go sideways if not.

Heartland/DRV has paid to have transporter pickup/deliver the trailers or in some cases reimbursed for fuel and/or rooms.

They are only willing to replace the roof for free as we are the second owner and really had no warranty left. Unless you (Duane) know someone there lol....by the way I hope you get your new truck soon

I could see the good will stopping at the roof replacement then.

Truck is scheduled to be built on 09/13. Could take a 4-6 weeks from then depending on the mid Atlantic easterly orders.

Weight is always an issue. I’d stay with 3/8’s. If theres an option to seal before the roof material that I’d opt for.

1/8" plywood is NOT going to make squat difference.

I would go with the 1/2" if they will replace it.

guess all depends how weight sensitive you are. Some are on the bubble.

a 38 footer would be roughly 10 sheet if fully covered and would be another 100 pounds. No huge but just saying.

I had a branch go through my roof on a bunkhouse travel trailer and insurance covered it, the company replace the roof with thick plywood, insulation and a full sheet of aluminum. after it was done I could walk all over the roof and during a thunderstorm we never heard anything, before that a person could hear every raindrop
