We were disappointed when the Michelin's side walls cracked and separated so severely with >half of their tread left @29K Mi (all six).
Replaced them with Continental Terraincontact H/T. They perform at least as well in every category. Plus, they have a rim bead protector rib. No complaints so far, so will see if they outlast the over-rated brand? We've always liked dealing with Les Schwab too.

Care to elaborate on what LS charged you out the door?

I am changing out my wheels to Alcoa's with 6k rating. Also biting the bullet and changing to Continental "J" 18 ply tires on the DRV. NOT changing wheels because the tires have a higher rating as my per tire weight does not exceed the "H" tires or HiSpec wheels.

Changing because I am planning to sell my four wheels and GY "H" 6114's as a combo, the tires are dated 1 year old.

Did the same thing years back on the Landmark when I changed the axles to 8K. Added balance beads and Nitrogen (free) and ran them 5 years over the mountains and across the desert prior to selling the unit when I bought the Tuscany. Never had one off the Landmark

Correct me if I'm wrong, I always thought the higher the ply rating of the tire, the stiffer the sidewall and the harder the compound used to make the tire. That would translate to a bit harder ride when inflated as specified, and give longer wear (more mileage) in the long term. OEM tires typically are softer compound and lower ply rating to give that cushy ride (wow factor) but crappy longevity.

PER GY Tech support, when up sizing in load range weigh your RV tires and use the weight/inflation chart for your specific tire size and load range. Now add 5psi to the chart pressure. New tires are 125psi MAX @ 6,005 lbs. 100 psi will give 5,025 lbs capacity.

This will give the best ride, stopping and tread wear.

I too saw this on the Cummins forum and if I remember correctly he got 117,000 miles out of them and as he said: "He always tows heavy" Got nearly 30,000 miles on them and very little visual wear. No complaints about the ride I might add.

Two totally different aspects of the tire.
You are correct in the more plies the stiffer the sidewall is. As heavier loads require stiffer sidewalks to hold the load up. Cars are usually 4 plies, vans are usually 6-8 as they are designed to carry heavier loads.
The tread compound has nothing to do with the plies used.
Just like plies serve a purpose for the application, tread compound does also. Like track tires are soft to allow as much grip as possible but wear quickly. Also depending on the groves and sipping of a tire are factors on compounds and the type of compounds used.
Tires are designed with a purpose in mind.
