Water softer for Hot water only

Has anyone have a DRV that has installed a water softer in the Hot Water input.

I have a whole house external water softer that I would like I would like to use only on the hot water. Washing dishes, cloths and Hair is largely warm/hot water. The toilet does need soft water.
My thoughts buy the same valving that is used in a manual water heater by-pass and place the hardware in water line going from the Anderson Kantleak valve to the water heater.
Question where do I mount the valves and place the hose connections. Or does someone have have a better solution. I use the water softer only once or twice a year but want easy to connect and disconnect. Also I want use with or without water softer.
In part I may be able to move the pump switch for some mounting surface.

Suggestions ???

How much difference do you think it will make to soften the water heater only?
Really every valve needs soft/good water. Even the toilet. Why not just hook it up to the city water inlet and be done with it?

You said hot and warm. Warm water is part hot and cold. Not sure what softening just the hot water is going to do if you are using cold water also. You really should use the softener for all of your water.

Well the West Coast water here SUCKS!!! I mean SUCKS, did I mention that the water SUCKS? The water is so hard that I would have to regenerate my water softener every 4-5 days.
The water quality can change down the street, that is why I always test it. Heck across the street at the SKP resort the water is AWESOME! They pump out of artesian well. So you never know unless you test it.

Thanks for the responses. There are several reasons for having soft water as several reasons for hard water. I could say I grew up on hard water and like my drinking water hard, that includes coffee. I did a little experiment 30 years ago while watering the plants. The hard water plants always looks healthier than soft watered after 6 month. But in the end, rain water was always the best.
Clay where things sure are quiet.
