Another newbie!

My wife and I are totally new to the RV world but have just bought a 2019 Freedom Elite 26HE.

My first impression is that there is an awful lot of reading material to get through! An instruction manual for every component it seems. But I'd rather have too many manuals than not enough!

Somewhere in the pile must be the answer to the first question I have: The radio (and associated backup camera) only work when the main electricity switch (is there a better term?) is turned on. Is it usual to have that switch turned on when just driving down the road even if there is nobody in the back? And since I think that means the house batteries are being used, does the engine charging system actually charge the house batteries as well as the chassis battery?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Yes, oddly the radio runs on the house current not the engine.
This saves the engine battery from running down while you're playing the radio when stopped for a stay.

It HAS to be normal and the right way to do it, or you just won't have a radio or camera.

Welcome to your greatest adventure ever!
Yes: that stuff works off the coach batteries... But I don't know why!

Our Aria is the same way-perhaps to remind us that the House batteries are ON...

Thanks for the info. Certainly makes sense that you can use the radio at rest without running down the chassis battery.

Another reason to have the battery switch on (in Vegas & Axis it is called the USE/STORE switch) is so that the engine driven alternator will charge the house batteries while yo are driving.

It's real important to remember -- the house batteries will not charge from shore power, generator power, or the engine-driven alternator unless that switch is ON.

Also on my 2015 Vegas (don't know if it's the same for your Freedom Elite, the radio uses both the house and the chassis battery.

1- House batteries provide power to operate radio and cameras.
2- Chassis battery provides power to the radio's clock circuit and the radio presets.

If the chassis weren't providing that power, every time you turn off the battery power the radio presets would disappear and the clock would flash that 12:00 because the time would always reset. That's why those two functions are hard wired from the chassis battery.
