Hello from Alaska!

Hello everyone! We're new to the RV gang and just purchased a "used" 2018 Thor FE. We're relocating back to the lower 48 this Oct and will be driving from Fairbanks, AK to N.J. But before that we will be taking 45 days to drive all the way down the west coast, to FL, then making our way to N.J. So far we've been watching a bunch of YouTube videos, and gathering the required supplies. We're excited for this trip! - Shane

Thank you everyone for the very warm welcome. Yes I will keep everyone abreast of our trip w/pictures.

This was taken in Healy, AK the first night I picked it up in Anchorage and drove 8 hrs all night back to Fairbanks. AK truck drivers at night are intense.

Welcome to the RV world.

I'm going to guess you'll be using military campgrounds where and when available. I did and still do. If you don't have one, check the PX for a copy of "Military RV, Camping and Outdoor Recreation" - might be in Tours and Tickets Office. Published by www.militaryliving.com. There was talk of it being done away with - my copy is 2012.

A great help is a website put together by a former USAFer. www.militarycompgrounds.us is very up-to-date and accepts inputs from military travelers. Loads of info on CGs, PX/NEX/MCX, commissary, gas, medical.

If you use android, allstays.com has a free app (CRV Military) that also lists "Tents for Troop Sites" throughout the US for active duty use. One or two FREE nights of camping. That'll definitely help the travel budget. Wish that program had been around when I was on active duty. The stand alone website for the TFT Program is www.tentsfortroops.org

Travel safe and thanks for your service

First off Welcome.

Next: There are a great deal of military campgrounds in both Alaska and the lower 48. You're probably leaving Eielson AFB. We've done the AlCan twice in a large SUV - once through Great Falls, MT and once through Minot, ND. The Great Falls route is shorter (save you a few bucks in fuel $s) but with lots more to see. Get a general feel for your route then look at U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks - U.S. Military Recreation Facilities for FamCamps along the way. The site has a very up to date clickable US Map showing FamCamps for all branches of service. We use the FamCamps about 80% of the time. Normally full hookups, "behind the wire", access to facilities and very reasonable rates. Most of the FamCamps accept reservations. If you have a RV Based GPS, you can download the specific POIs (I think there are 250+-) and then upload them to your GPS. Best of luck and thank you for your service.

Yes sir we drove the ALCAN coming here in 15’ from CO. This time our route will be through Seattle. We will definitely be taking advantage of the FAMCAMPS. We’re staying at the Eielson one for about a month prior to leaving.

Joint Base Lewis McChord near Seattle has a couple of Fam Camps on base. One of them takes reservations and is within a mile of the main gate, PX and commissary.

Consider joining an RV group named S.M.A.R.T. All members are active, retired, honorably discharged or dependents of military. Small organization, but has chapters that cover most of the U.S. and is a great source for up to date base info.

We just stopped at McChord - Mount Rainer looking over your shoulder is spectacular. The FamCamp was nice BUT to use the available cable, make sure you get the decoder box from the office.

Great advice thanks. My only complaint is I have to check my weapons into Security Forces armory. That my deter me from staying on base.

That is an issue. If you're found in possession even a with CCW permit, it is an issue. Probably more for active service than us old peeps. IMO if you're staying on base it is worth the hassle. As I said, just my opinion
