Jeep Flat Towing

Question:
I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler 6 speed. With it in gear and the transfer case in neutral I am flat towing. What I want to know is ... is it OK to start the Jeep and idle it with those settings ... in gear and transfer case in neutral?
Sometimes I just want to let it charge the battery if we have been towing for many days.
Thanks for any info.

I can’t answer your question specifically, but would it not be easier to add a charge line to allow it to charge whenever you’re towing?

Too late for that already on the road. But thanks. Will keep that in mind for the next journey.

How hard is it to shift the transmission to neutral? Or did you want to run the vehicle while towing? If so, no problem leaving it in gear.

+1.. I have a charge line, but I wouldn't hesitate to run any engine with a transfer case in neutral. If the engine is running it's getting the care it needs (lube/cooling/etc).

Yes you can start the Jeep while in tow mode. We have done it.

Have you checked your owner's manual for the Jeep? I flat tow a 2011 Wrangler and leave the transmission in Park (not "in gear" which I'm assuming you mean "drive"). Of course the transfer case is in neutral. And no problem running the engine in this configuration.

We have a Cherokee and since we have the air lift option the manual tells us to run the engine once a day to make sure the bags stay inflated. Zero issues.

Why? Not required and prevents using the onboard battery for the braking system.

No, the OP has a manual transmission. No "Park", No "Drive". He is following the procedure in his Owners Manual.

Ah, OK. Didn’t see the part about a manual transmission.
