First time thread
So we've all heard about Thor quality issues, but what i found today is just crazy. Been full timing it in a Windsport 31Z. Not plush, but not bad either. I went to check my smoke detector, nothing.....ok, batteries dead.
Now i must admit, this is the first time i've checked it since new. Open it up, there was no battery to to replace. Not good. My fault, should have check it sooner. Just want everyone to know, when you buy a Thor, you really have to go thru it with a fine tooth comb. I mean, check EVERYTHING!! This should have been cought by the dealer, but wasn't..
I've been in Aviation for over 30 years and just assumed that when you buy something like an RV, people would have pride in workmanship, do things right, esp. when something like a smoke detector could get you hurt .
Ok, enough of the soap box. Just beware...
Thanks

My wife uses the smoke detector as a cooking timer...I would know right off if it wasn't working.

Not just a Thor thing: The dealer could easily check that and put a fresh battery in--or worse: the dealer could easily check that and remove the battery Thor thoughtfully left for you !

Welcome to the best Forum around.
It might take you a year to get all of the bugs out of a new RV... so hang in their.

I too, spent over 30 years in aviation (custom business aircraft), and yes in that industry there is pride in workmanship and an expectation of a quality product.
However comparing the construction of multi-million dollar aircraft that are most often custom built with a mass produced RV that often sell for less than $100,000 may be a stretch.
For example, aircraft cabinet makers are usually craftsman while in the RV industry, from what I’ve seen, craftsmen are few and far between. ( the true craftsmen move on to the aircraft industry, where the pay is much better )
But, you do have a point, the RV industry does need to concentrate more on building a quality product.

The question would then become: "How much more are you willing to pay?"

We took the battery out of our smoke detector because it had MANY false alarms - cooking, nearby campfire and sometimes just to annoy us for no apparent reason. Still, knowing that this is not so safe we put a detector in the bedroom so it can wake us up if there’s a fire. Figured that if we were in the living room we’d likely be awake and would notice if there was a fire. Likely not a plan for everyone but it works for us. Maybe I’ll try buying a higher quality detector and hope it is more discriminating.

There was a battery in our black bag of info for the smoke detector.
