Newbie almost

Looking to buy axis 24.1. We are hoping to be able to get around without towing a car. Is this crazy.
Any info/ insights would be most helpful.
Thank you
V and d

Well, if you need a car to drive once your set up some place, get a set of walkie talkies and follow each other. Or you can put a rack on the RV for bycycles or motorcycles.

Trying to figure out if the 25 foot rv is maneuverable for getting us around. We are thinking we’d only be in park on down days and in the evenings .

The cost of walkie talkies or buying something to pull your car with, if the car can be towed & some can't be? Get the walkie talkies. But yes, you can get tow bars, trailers, bike racks and such if you want. At my age, dealing with airports being way too long, I got 2 three wheeled battery powered scooters, take them apart and put em in the back of the car trailing the RV.

Your going to find it half that say they never bring a car and half that says. Really depends on what kind of camping you are going to do. Are you going to a park and basically staying there most of the time riding bikes or something and rarely leaving. Or do you want to get at your park and then go places. Some people don’t mind unhooking and setting up and it’s not hard but can get old.

We were thinking more the second. Getting to new place and exploring the area/town/points of interest. We’re thinking hook up and undoing wouldn’t be that big a deal but we’ve never done it.
Thank you for you insights.

Good idea. Some folks rent vehicles when they need to get around. Some campgrounds actually have busses to pick up folks to take to the attractions. Some campgrounds have everything so you don't need to go as anywhere.

We have a Vegas and DW was a little shy about driving around towns until I told her it’s about the same size as a UPS truck so where they can go you can go. No problem after that.

Thank you .
What about hook ups? And moving most days?
We traveled with my folks in 42 foot dutchstar, they always pulled a CRV but that was awhile back and my dad didn’t let us help much.
Wish he was here to advise. They loved rving. He was a 2 time Vietnam vet.
Thank you for your service.
Sorry, off subject. Any info is appreciated.

Check out this website:
http://thelonglongroad.com/
and her prior website:
http://48in366.com/
She is pretty much full timing it in an Axis with only her and a puppy. No car, no rentals.

Unhooking up and re-hooking up really isn't an issue. Especially if you only use water and electric (just hookup sewer when you need to dump). Leave a cone or sign at your site just in case and off you go.

I should also add.. With a giant sharpie I wrote my Plate # and ph. #on the base of the cone exposed. So when I park at a hotel etc. Saves my spot. Has worked so far.

Our definition of exploring requires a towed car. We almost always unhook the car and go to places where the coach can't. We like to check out the local restaurants and visit friends and family. Flat towing, it isn't hard to hook up or unhook. Just a few minutes, but it requires a significant expense to set it all up with base plate, tow bar, brakes and lights.

If you expect to be changing cars, or don't plan to use your rig all that much or that long, you might consider a tow dolly. Lots of RVers on this forum are happy with that option. Your results may vary.

We use our toad to explore the area and our coach as the "base." I kept a log this year recording miles and fuel used on our trips for both coach and toad. The toad had almost as many miles put on it in exploring as the coach did getting to the camp sites. At this rate the tow bar will be paid off in gas savings sometime next year. But, we like to explore a lot, your situation may be different.

Almost newbie. No more

After going thru the Vegas users manual /checklist this weekend we are backing out of our purshase of the Axis. It looks like a LOT more work, maintinance upkeep than we expected.
Much thanks to everyone for all information provided.

Well, you could also 'rent' an RV for a week or so & a couple of times to really learn everything before you buy one. That means you will have to plot where you go, when you go back and if you can remember everything you need to do to the RV, everytime you set up and get ready to leave. Curious that the Europeans coming here on vacation, don't have the problems that we do. Maybe they have better trainning? Or maybe I'm wrong about that.

the 25.1 is a nice size to keep in the driveway (as I do), but a little too big for touring around tows. So I converted the rear compartment of mine into a toy hauler so I could haul my Honda Trike in the back to get around with and I also don't have to tow anything. When the trike is out, we set up twin bed frames and mattresses back there. If we're only stopping for the night and don't need the trike, I have replaced the dinette set with a queen size sofa bed. We made a 3 week cross country trip last May and all was great (except the storms that ran us back home to CA).
