Wink Average MPG

Returned Sunday from a 11 day trip to THOR for warranty work. Averaged 13 mpg going up and 14 mpg return at 65 mph. Low 11.7 and high 15. Once in Indiana the weather turned for the worst. High 20s to middle 30s with high winds, rain, sleet and snow. Windows and vents covered with reflectex. Set the thermostat to 60 at night threw an extra blanket on the bed and covered the dog's kennel with two blankets and we were very comfortable. Overnighted at Walmart.

32’ Hurricane with Ford F53 chassis gets 7.5 to 9 mpg. 7.5 while towing in mountainous terrain and 9 w/o toad and on flatland.

My realistic opinion is that most of us will see between 8 & 9 mpg with Ford E chassis Class C and between 7 & 8 with an F 53 chassis. My friend with a Transit chassis Gemini says he gets about 14.

How did your experience at Wakarusa go?

Not bad for a motorhome that large.

Manufacturers should offer some units that size that got 12~13 MPG on gasoline chassis. Lower initial cost could attract new buyers.

Very happy with their service. I had two warranty items, slides bowed in the middle and the drivers wing wall delaminated. The slide was not properly aligned when installed. Slide operates much smoother and quieter. They spent several hours on the slide and it still has a small gap at the bottom which is hardlly noticable. They had to keep it overnight Tuesday and they put us in a motel and furnished us a rental car. They replaced the steps, water pump, tail lights, adjusted coach door. yey also did a propane leak test, and ran it through the rain booth. They finished up a 10 Friday morning and we were on our way 30 minutes later. All at no cost to us.

Had two small problem while on the road. Both on the way up. I had to tighten the AC hold down bolts at the first rest area we stopped. Approximately 15 minutes delay and then back on the road. Just south of Kokoma, Ind. the MH jumped out of cruse and an alarm would sound when l tried to reengage. A symbol of a skidding vehicle and a tire showed on the dash. After lunch when I turned on the key everything was okay. Except for the cold weather in Indiana the trip was enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate to go again if need to.

Great report...for those that have never been, the attitude and dedication of the factory service people are completely different than any dealer experience I've ever had. They really care and service is all they do. If you have big issues...take it home!

ACE 30.2 or Four Winds 30D

Hey all! My wife and I are looking into purchasing our first RV and are interested in both the Thor ACE 30.2 and Four Winds 30D.

We are looking for feedback on what others think is the better RV. We like the extra capacities (fuel, water, propane and such) of the Class A but thought with the less weight that Class C would get much better gas mileage to make it worth serious consideration. However looking through this thread it seems they both get pretty close to the same.

Any first hand knowledge or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

While it's plenty large enough for two "Olpharts", and their five-poound dog: it's only a touch under 26 feet long...
The Toad will make up for the 16 mpg average: it seems to want to get between 55, and 65 mpg!

Welcome to the site.

They both are pretty much a brick on wheels (with the Class C, perhaps, having a little bit worse aerodynamics).

Don't shop for gas mileage; shop like you would a house and go for the one with the floorplan, storage, etc. you like better. You'll likely live in it more than you drive it (even if you take it all over the US you'll still be more comfortable with a floorplan you like better).

Welcome to the forum! I have an ACE 30.1 & we bought it for the floor plan. Everyone kept telling us that the floor plan was most important, all else can be modified or replaced. The only way you are going to get better mileage of any significance is if you get a Class B, or buy a vehicle to pull a trailer/5th wheel. Once you get into the larger class A or C you can't be worried about the gas mileage, it is what it is, lousy. It also depends on where you drive it, like going up mountains. Try to figure out what would serve you best, how it feels to drive them, how many people will be sleeping in the RV. I wanted something that gave us a separation between the bedroom and kitchen/sitting area. That way if I got sick of my DH on a trip I could lock him in the bedroom [emoji16][emoji16][emoji16][emoji16]

But to more specifically answer your question, I think you can expect to get about 8.5 mpg with the class C and 7.5 with the A. That would be based on my personal experience though not with the exact models you are considering. Of course how you drive has a lot to do with it so your results may vary. As others have said, the difference probably is not big enough to be a deciding factor in selecting a coach. Consider storage and cargo capacities as well as floor plans and get what you like. Some people value personal safety very highly and go with the class C because it has crash airbags and quite a bit more structure between you and whatever you happen to hit. The one piece of fiberglass on a class A sure ain’t much!

We are first time rv owners and spent over 6 months looking/comparing various class a& c models. The first issue I had with class c was front seat comfort/legroom. I under 6ft and I was amazed that within the same brand how legroom varied. We ended up buying a class a,2019 windsport 27b and very happy with comfort driving and storage. A word of caution on storage, pay attention to cargo weights, there are some class a & a lot of class c that are overloaded with full fuel, some water, propane and 2 human beings. As far as mpg, ours varies depending on wind, recently no wind, relatively flat almost got 12mpg for over 700 miles, driving at 57mph. Good luck with your search.

It sounds as if you took the whole "shopping experience" to a very successful conclusion!
Your'e right: slowing down a bit can often boost your fuel economy by a very significant amount!
Besides: it gives you more of a chance to look around, and enjoy the scenery!

I have a 2017 24.1. We drove from Los Angeles to Buffalo and averaged about 10 mpg no tow but heavy.

Last trip we made yielded the following: A.C.E. 29.3, pulling our toad, a Nissan Xterra, first mileage check was 8.5; second just a bit over 8. Mix of interstate and two/four lane highways; mostly hilly; limited stop-n-go. Never over 65 mph; usually between 55 and 60.

YMMV... really!

Mostly put the cruise control on 65, at times hit 70-75.
