Hiya Jeff, I'm glad your survived your trial by fire, without the fire, thankfully. And you're well on your way up the learning curve. The forum has been the best source of informed and experienced knowledge for many of us.
I really like Beau388's of placing your hand on the chimney above the heating element to check for heat, every start up. It's so simple and something I'd never thought of. "Like, DUH!" the voice in my head sez.
Buy an EMS Surge Protector, either the portable or the wired-in. (search the forum, lots of discussion) Also get a small voltage tester or multimeter and check the pedestal every time you hookup at a camp ground. The forum is full of instances of poorly maintained and down right dangerous situations.
Also, let me suggest you download this crowd sourced manual. While it's focused on the Vegas/Axis models the general knowledge is applicable to all RVs, and covers most all systems
