Spare Tire options

Just got a 2023 Thor Sequence and realized…No Spare Tire! what’s with that? Is it wise to travel without a spare?

Welcome aboard!
No spare tire is common in todays RVs. Hundreds of opinions on here on whether to purchase/carry a spare. Use search feature type in spare tire.

With our 2022 Quantum we decided it was not wise to travel without a spare.

I carry a full spare with rim on my rig
But, fun fact…
Most new cars sold today do not have a spare or location to carry a spare.

And that’s part of the problem, no place to carry much of anything to begin with let alone a spare tire, I’ll probably just risk it without a spare, roadside assistance would probably take a while but the class B is a comfortable place to hang out 😊

Nope many cars these days do not even have a pseudo-spare. So you can get a swing-away carriage, or one like I did- a Landed Gear mount for the Promaster. I got a LH side one and used the bike rack to carry a small gear box, and I also have a Yakima gear box that clears nicely. All kinds of options.

I will not go anywhere w/o a spare tire! One time I went out, and guess what heppened? Just my car, I had a spare with me, but NO TOOLS... so phone call to home and son brought me my kit I had left behind.

Source for Promaster alloy (or steel) wheel for the 3500 PM best found on eBay- lots there.
Tire should match size/type and most important, load index of 115. I got mine from Simple Tire.
Pics show before getting the LG carrier, using the bike rack-
WARNING- Do not attempt using the bike carrier w/o verifying that Thor actually used adhesive on the install- mine was dry and had scratched the paint badly from the weight of the wheel. (damage can be seen in the 2nd pic with the exposed wheel)- I decided to put it back on and used Sikaflex 252 as per the Thule manual. Moved the spare, and added a box instead.
Thor had agreed to repaint, but I went with plan B instead. The adhesive covers the damage nicely, and it ain't never gonna come off!

Also note the use of 'wheel hanger bolts' (eBay or Amazon) that I use for stud-less hubs like VW and Ram have. Use these to hang the wheel on the carrier and also to hang on the hub when changing a flat tire. I keep them in my handy tool kit. Wish I had these for my cars when I was younger!

I also have a 12V jack I carry with me, and spanner for the bolts. I have had 40 cars, and never go out w/o some kind of kit- this bag is in either my car or RV, depending on which I am using. My car has a spare too- none supplied...
This site turned my pics 90 deg. btw...
You can PM me for a pdf I made to install the Landed Gear carrier on my 20L Tellaro. I added Havelock wool in both doors. LG now includes the plate holder, which I later added.

Flat tires (excluding those due to lack of proper maintenance) are probably the least issue anyone has with any configuration of RV.

Unless you're on the shoulder of a busy interstate highway. In that case get you and your people well off the road as you wait. Ask any State Trooper or Tow Truck driver.

No spare tire is common in today's RVs and becoming more and more common for autos. However, consider this, when was the last time you needed a spare? The last time I used a spare on my daily driver was about 8 years ago and that was for a tire that had to be replaced. I noticed the tire was low one morning. I pumped it up to full pressure and drove to the dealership to get it fixed. Because the puncture was in a non-reparable location a tire had to be ordered. So, they put the spare on so I could continue to drive to work until the replacement was delivered. The last time I had a flat that needed a spare was over 25 years ago on my RV and that was a blowout due to a slow leak on a valve stem. That happened before TPMS systems were readily available and affordable. Since then, I have never had a need to use a spare on any of my vehicle's. Instead, I closely monitor the air pressure in my tires and replace them as needed for age and or treadwear.

Of course, if you insist on getting every last mile out of your tires and nurse them along until they resemble Yul Brynner then you need a spare or six. And I hope I am nowhere nearby as you roll your RV into a little ball when the blowout occurs.

I would not travel without a spare. in the 3 years we have been full time, never needed it, but i sleep better knowing it is there. even if I can't install it myself due to circumstances, I can hire someone to do it. I found a place under the rear, in back of the gas tank. made 2 brackets to hold it up. note that I do not have levelers and have seen where those that do have levelers the levelers are in this space and thus the spare may not fit there. it is a snug fit, but it does fit.
the price of not having a spare, having to wait for a spare and installation concerns me.
the pict shows the spare held up with two brackets, the gas tank is to the front of the spare, bottom of pict, the hitch is shown at top of pict.
