Trip planning

Good morning to all.

I’m planning our longest road trip from Southern California
to Mount Rushmore, fly fish Montana, Moab Utah, and home.
Should I just get my AAA maps and start planning or is there a system on line? I was looking at the Garmin 890 system but $500 seems a bit much.
Thanks.
Keith

I use google maps + street view for verification along with a ton of research on the web prior to the trip (and given the times we are in there has been plenty of time for research LOL).

I also start out with Google maps and a bunch of research on the routing. Once the destination is plugged into the GPS: it's a matter of checking off the printed and electronic routes against each other.
(It sounds like a GREAT trip! )

Pick a destination, grab your maps or use Google maps & head that general direction, don't plan XXX miles per day, just go enjoy the ride & see the sights along the way.
If you're in a class C any kind height or weight restrictions should not be a problem.
Not sure about anyone else, but we enjoyed Crazy Horse monument more than Mt Rushmore, Rushmore is very impressive but a huge tourist trap, CH is/was a work in progress, less people & you could get up close.
Hope all this pandemic nonsense gets over with soon, if not it's doubtful you'd get into any of those attractions.

Hi Jkeith

It is a great trip. We have gone to Yellowstone from Southern California twice(2019 and 2020). I took the 15 up through Las Vegas, Salt Lake City into Idaho and then from there you go onto a state route directly into Yellowstone. Going to Mount Rushmore is just a bit further. If you are leaving anytime soon, make sure your mh is set up for freezing weather and protect your water/sewage lines from freezing. It is a great trip and beautiful country to see/visit. I used my onboard GPS and had a couple of AAA maps as back up. There are many campgrounds along the way. Mesquite Nevada(border of Nevada/Arizona) north of Las Vegas is a R V Campground at The Casa Blanca Casino/R V Resort. Great place to stop overnight. Costs $33.00 night with full hook ups, clean restrooms and a good place to eat inside the casino. Just call them to reserve a spot. You drive up to the front of the casino to check in and go around to the back to the R V spaces.

Paul

We've travelled 40,000 miles in our RV. We plan trips using Google maps and RV Trip Wizard ($50 annual). We think Google has the best routing and Trip Wizard has better campground planning. We use a combination of advance reservations and spontaneous on-the-road decisions. The Overnight RV Parking app is $20 per year and is great for planning free or cheap overnight stops.

We don't plan too tightly.
There is little worse for us than having a reservation, Making good time, and having to quit at 3pm when we could be somewhere else.
Quitting just because we made a good time, or hurrying to make up a lost hour.

Use these programs, loosen up, take a back road, see the world's second largest ball of twine or the Broken Clock Museum.

Sygic trucks is our choice of map programs.
Buying a stand alone map unit is like buying a typewriter. Archaic, but does indeed do the one job it does, just like days of old.

iExit is a must have.

Get an android tablet.
Have your navigator look a couple of hours ahead.
