If anyone needs a reason to sanitize
It is supposed to get below freezing tonight so I decided that I would dry winterize the Accolade. First I opened the low point drains, drained the hot water heater and opened the drain for the fresh water tank. when I went inside and started opening faucets to blow air through there was an awful smell. I do not know where General RV filled the water tank to do the PDI but that water stinks.
Since we are going to take the coach on a shakedown this coming weekend I am going to do a good sanitizing of the fresh water system before we go.

Sorry to hear that you'll be dealing with this..
What will you use to sanitize the tank?
(I've heard good reports for a touch of Clorox, as well as hydrogen peroxide...)

Thats the first thing I did on all my previous and present RVs. and we only drink bottled water. We carry three gals always plus several small bottles in the refridgerator. I find camp ground water either over chlorinated or it smells like hydrogen sulfide.
Good luck and safe cruising

I use chlorine bleach. Use a ratio of 1/4 to one gallon of water and and for every 15 gallons of tank capacity. So for my coach I will need 4.8 gallons for the 72 gallon fresh water tank. I'll go ahead and round up and use 5 gallons. Run it through all of the fixtures and let it sit for about 4 or 5 hours then rinse it all out and put in a new whole house filter element and change the filter on the fridge.
That is basically the same solution I used on the Challenger for years. It works well.

Sanitizing complete
Well I went out and sanitized the fresh water system in the coach today. There was a bit of a learning curve because the Nautilus P3 System is quite different than the Andersen Kantleak system that was on the Challenger.
One thing the procedures told me to do was mix the solution and then use the water pump to siphon the solution into the water tank. After completing that then put clean water into a container and siphon it into the tank using the water pump. Repeat this until the water tank is full. For me that would be 19 5 gallons buckets. Instead I hooked up my water hose and power filled the tank.
I let the solution remain in the water lines and tank for 6 hours. When draining the tank I wanted to verify which tank my bathroom sink drained into so I turned on the water pump and opened the vanity faucets. That sink along with everything else beside the toilet dump into the grey tank. The toilet is the only fixture dumping into the black tank.
Tomorrow I will replace the whole house and fridge water filters.

EA37TS,
Glad to hear that it all went as expected, and you got to learn a bit about your coach!

Wow. That’s a lot of bleach! I’ve always heard the recipe is 1/4 CUP of bleach per 15 gallons of water capacity. So I use just 1 1/4 cups for my 75 gallon system (or a splash more to account for the water heater).

I've never used bleach in any of our 8 motorhomes, we have city water in Titusville and I flush the tank regularly, never heard a complaint or got sick from this maintenance regime.

That’s the same. 1/4 cup to 1 gallon per 15 gallons or 1 1/4 cup for 73 gallon tank.

But you did say in post #4 above...
"So for my coach I will need 4.8 gallons for the 72 gallon fresh water tank."
"That is basically the same solution I used on the Challenger for years. It works well."
Stay cool

Yes 4.8 gallons mixed at 1/4 cup bleach per gallon of water or 1.25 cups for the 4.8 gallons of solution for the 72 gallon tank.

Verbal Math questions give me a rash...
Is there a chart anywhere; that covers this procedure?
(30 gallon freshwater tank...)

I fill the fresh water tank to almost full and then use my winterizing antifreeze pump and pump a solution of 1/2 cup of bleach mixed with 2 gallons of water into the tank, this is enough for a 30 gallon fresh water tank. I also take the MH on short drive to mix it all around and then let it sit for a couple of hours, run the water pump and open each tap to sanitize the spigots (hot and cold) , drain and refill and drain again to get rid of the bleach smell, you can also fill the water heater and drain that too.
Its a bit of a long process but should be done

HA!
Now try converting it to imperial and/or metric (with a double ratio inserted)....
But Clorox says... Bleaching Water Tanks- #2
They recommend 1 cup to 10 U.S. gal and then rinse.
Stay cool

Do you know what that just sounded like to me?
"If Bill and Joyce leave NYC on a West-bound train, and she's wearing a pink skirt: How many pancakes can be eaten by any angry piano?"
The correct answer is: "Plaid: because aliens don't wear pants!"

If always read and followed the 1/4 cup per 15 gallons rule
