Oh my! Who would have thought it?

Wow! We have a 2016 Thor Ace 29.3... it is a great coach and everything works. No problems worth mentioning. 11K miles. We contacted Bretz RV to see about trading up for something a little bigger. Imagine our reaction when the salesman told us we could only get $47K trade. I know they are listed on RVT.com for up to $75. He never looked at our unit.

He told us extras put on like Safe-T-Plus etc. added no trade in value. He said virtually no "improvements" added value when you trade in. They were offering us about 50% of what we paid on a two year old coach! Needless to say we will keep it and drive it into the ground. I have owned a lot of cars over the years, and yes they depreciate, but 50% in only two years is unheard of in my experience. If I had known, I would not have purchased a new motor home. Oh well. That depreciation works out to more than $27,000 per year. On a coach that had a msrp of more than $112,000 which we paid $89,900 for. What has your experience been?

It’s sometimes hard to tell with a trade in but I think I’d try again at another dealer before I gave up. Notwithstanding, RVs do seem to depreciate quickly. I lost about $15,000 on a 7 month old class C when we traded it on a 29 ft Class A. It hurts but it is what it is and for us it was worth it. Perhaps it will hold approximately the same value for a couple of more years. Value seems to crash after 4 or 5 years though. Like they won’t give you a bag of peanuts. Good luck!

you’ve quoted what a single, and probably uninterested, person ‘told’ you ... I would do alot of research before settlimg on a ‘true’ number... but, yes, RVs are NOT like your daily driver - you can’t compare the two...

besides, trading in is always going to be the LEAST you can get!

Likely he could have done a lot better. The unit I wanted to buy was $10K over NADA. And although it had only 11K miles, he said it needed new tires. I asked why and he did not give me an answer So 10K over NADA, plus $2-3K more for new tires. He didn't seem to want to move a dollar. This was Bretz RV. My son and I have purchased 3 RV's from them in the past. Likely I will not deal with them again.

I was offered $69K on a new Winnebago Sunstar 35F, a really nice unit with full body paint etc. at another dealer. The MSRP for the unit was a little over $174,000 and I could have it for $138,000. A very fair price, but more than I wanted to spend.

So we will just add a few upgrades to our unit and continue to drive it. Like I told the salesman, "I will give you $47K for every 2016 29.3 you can come up with, and I will play cash." Of course, he didn't have any.

Trade-in is not based on actual value but more on "loan value". Plus, the cheaper they get them the quicker they can sell them and the more money they can make on it. Most people finance so loan value is the division bell. Sell it outright...if you have the time...you'll do much better.

Anyone who think that they're going to come out "okay" on a trade-in price: is probably drinking something that I'd like a taste of!
Always remember to take along that "bucket of grease"; when you go asking about trade-in prices!
