Arrow Thor Hurricane 30q - New owner and new RVer

Hey everyone!

My wife and I are in the process of buying a used 2012 Thor Hurricane 30q from a local dealer. It still looks new and has 14k miles and also has 2 AC units (which I believe is an "upgrade"). We are super excited. We traded in a fairly new Forest River EVO travel trailer for the Hurricane. We decided we wanted to get a MH because of the ease of setting up and so we can carry our trailer with our Rhino when going to the beach. We also love the idea of dry camping on the beach and having the generator built in the MH is nice. It has a Onan 5500 generator.

Ive searched around online the last week and I dont seem to be finding alot of opinions on the Hurricane 30q. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Ha!

Look forward tohanging out here and learning all I can as we are fairly new to RVing in general.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your Hurricane!
Have a 2014 Hurricane 32A here - several other Hurricane owners active here too.

Welcome to the forum! We enjoyed a similar Class A for several years and really enjoyed it. It served us well during that time. Bring your questions here, lots of experienced, helpful folks willing to help!

Congratulations. I'm looking forward to any feedback you may have on the 30Q. You are correct, there isn't much information out there on that floorplan.

We are interested in a compact slideless Class A, and the 30Q comes as close to what we want as anything on the market today. Its large MegaStorage compartment in back is one of the features I really want in a motorhome.

I hope you report back and share information.

Thanks! Yes, I am seeing that there is alot of info here. That's a good thing because I will probably have lots of questions.

Yea, that compartment under the back is HUGE, we really dig that as well. This is our first Class A so we decided we didn't mind not having a slide (just another thing to go wrong, right?. I have toured on buses with a band with no slides so to me, its no big deal. We came from the travel trailer that had a slide but to me, the MH feels bigger inside, even without the slide... even though both the travel trailer and MH are basically the same length.

I am surprised at how little info there is out there on the 30q. I guess its probably a good thing because if people where having lots of problems, I'm sure people would be posting it since most people like to complain (vent) on a forum about issues they are having.

The 30Q is a little bigger than we need or prefer, but in the absence of other choices we remain interested in that floorplan. And I wouldn't hesitate buying used if in good condition. We've looked at a couple but they had issues -- some owners can be rough on RVs.

I agree that that floorplan feels plenty big even without a slide. There is a lot of room to lounge up front between the front chairs, the sofa, and the extra third chair. It's very open. I also like the all-in-one bathroom (don't recall what that's called). The floorplan is a classic that's worked for many manufacturers for decades.

If I may ask, does your unit have a rear window behind the bed? It seems that through 2011 most if not all had a window above headboard, but the 2012s I've seen don't have a window in rear cap. I was wondering if it was an option.

Also, since you have two Air Conditioners and larger generator, do you have a 30-Amp or 50-Amp service? I haven't seen one with 2 ACs or 50-Amp. For camping along Gulf Coast two ACs could come in handy.

Yes, ours has two ACs and it's got 50amp service. Our sales guy said they don't come that way so apparently the previous owner upgraded it. Ours does not have the window above the rear bed.

I was surprised at how big it felt in the front. Like you said, between the captain's chairs, sofa and extra seat, there was plenty of room for me, my wife, our 5 year old and the 15 year old. The only downside right now is the 15 year old is going to sleep on the sofa/bed but he's tall (6ft) so he will have to sleep diagonal. Lol

So interesting.. I got a PM saying pretty bad things about Thor in general. They said that there are no negative reviews of the 30q or Thor in general because this forum is owned by Thor and they delete any negative reviews or comments.

If so, that sucks...these forums can be very helpful when making a big purchase like this but if it's one sided, it doesn't help so much.

I wondered why I couldn't find any negative reviews on the Hurricane 30q... Maybe this is the reason?

Keep in mind that the vast majority of RV message board posts ARE for problems. Owners of RVs looking for a specific answer for a concern or problems that they have experienced.

You can find other message boards for Thor motorhomes, (IRV2 for example).

Thor is no worse than any of the other RV manufacturers. You will find Prevost, Monaco, Holiday Rambler, Tiffen, Winnebago owners complaining. Heck, Newmar owners excitedly schedule long stays at the factory "RVParking lot" for warranty repairs and service at the Newmar service center.!

Enjoy your motorhome. Don't let the naysayers harsh your mellow.

Thank you for the response.

I was actually starting to second guess our decision. I was afraid to walk into a money pit. I see quite a few negative experiences but I guess if you factor in how many absolutely love their RV, it is probably minimum overall. If they were that hard to take care of there wouldn't be so many on the roads.

From my perspective there seems to be plenty of negative reviews in general, from the way some motorhomes handle, to issues getting them fixed on a timely basis, slides that leak or are out timing, etc.

It's hard for me to imagine negative feedback is being deleted unless it's because of the way it's written. Perhaps inappropriate language or tone is deemed unacceptable.

I'm pretty sure this forum is not owned by Thor as there are plenty of negative comments on here and none have been deleted (as far as I know--why would Thor only delete some negative comments and not all??).

I believe the sysadmin has posted several times that the forums aren't owned by Thor.

I've heard bad things about Thor from many people, but our experience with them has been nothing but positive. I can also say bad things about other manufacturers as well..I think they all are the same.

I have posted negative comments during my headach wiht Harris Batteries, WFCO vs Harris Batteries and Thor's refusal to warranty the 5 month old batteries. Also problems with QC on the transmission cable vs exhaust system were very negatively addressed on this Forum. Not to mention "canabalized" units by others.

Now I have also posted positive notes regarding things being repaired, replaced and taken care of.

I have not seen any of my postings - positive or negative- being edited. I don't see Thor having influence or even much of a corporate presence on this Forum.

I appreciate the exchange that goes on here: the good, the bad and the ugly.

Thanks for the response. I agree, that's what this type of forum is about... the exchange of info, whether it's good or bad.

It's good to see that the PM I got was not necessarily true. Maybe that user just had a horrible experience, that doesn't mean Thor is terrible.

Overall I like it... I bought mine used - so didn't have the 'pleasure' of dealing with Thor warranty... The real key seems to be the dealership you work with.

I did get an extended service plan - the up side being many things are covered - the downside being if it is something significant, I have to take it to a dealer if I want them to pay for it (minus deductible...)
I'd much rather do the work myself - but they won't pay for and send me parts under the service plan.

After 3 trips to the dealer to fix an intermittent refrigeration issue I gave up... having paid the 'diagnostic charge' because they found nothing wrong... (My pictures showing the fridge at 80 degrees next to theirs showing it at 35...)
I now have an intermittent problem with my Jensen head unit... Have to time it right to get it to fail for the dealer... at a time where I don't need the MH for weeks... or just eat the cost or replacing it myself for the hour it will take me to swap.

That said - aside from 200 miles of driving (50 miles each way to drop off RV and drive toad home... then back to pick up 2 weeks later) - the dealer did fix virtually all the issues I found after taking ownership... from dead microwave to damaged floor.

All MH brands have issues - and many of the protections afforded auto buyers don't extend to RVs...

This is our second Thor MH... Had a 2000 Infinity for 4 years before getting the 2014... Upgraded to get more space (slides) as we now spend at least 3 months solid in it over winter. Went from 30A to 50A (though the Infinity did have 2 ACs - needed to run the genny or an extra 20amp line to run both...)

Lots of people here to help with questions... debugging... feel free to ask anything.... As fhenn said - this is not owned/controlled by Thor. I wish sometimes they would read it more than they seem to - might get some good ideas of things to fix...

I'm glad that its not the case that THOR is monitoring these forums and deleting things.

The person that messaged me also made a remark about me buying my MH from Camping World (basically saying I'm an idiot for buying something from them). Oh well, I am certainly new and maybe Camping World isn't the best but all I know is what I know and I can only make informed decisions based on the research I find at the time (for past history...which there isn't any in regards to owning a MH).
