2017 vegas v-10 fuel filter

I have a 2017 vegas ford v-10 with 40k miles.

it just started sputtering at around 50-55 mph. no CEL. starts and idles fine. cruises at low speeds fine. Thought of replacing fuel filter, but cant locate it. does anyone know where its located?

any thoughts on why it would just start to sputter? fuel pump? bad plugs ?

thx

Get a code reader and read the codes. Not all codes set a CEL.

A gasoline engine that sputters and misses either has a fuel supply problem as you suspect but it could possibly be ignition. Check the plugs and tires.

I’ve never looked for a fuel filter.

This may be too obvious, but did you check the air filter?

This is a little like comparing apples to oranges but many years ago I rented a 15 ft travel trailer as my first RV adventure. I was towing it with an International Harvester Scout Traveler. The Scout had a 304 V8. Everything was fine until we got into Colorado on I70, then I started having the problem you described when ascending hills. Mind you this was in relatively flat eastern Colorado. My first thought was fuel filter as well. I stopped somewhere between the Colorado border and Denver and luckily, I found a mechanic that knew what he was doing. He pulled off the fuel filter and opened it up expecting to find stuff clogging it, but it was clear. Then he disconnected the fuel line to the carburetor and had me crank the engine. While the engine was cranking the pump only shot fuel about once every 3 or 4 revolutions. Huh ha Bad fuel pump right, WRONG! Took the fuel pump off and went off to the local auto parts store and got a new fuel pump for my model and engine. It turned out that the new, Correct, pump was significantly different the shape of the pump arm would only give about 50% of a full stroke. Once the new fuel pump was installed, I had no more trouble pulling up the hills and mountains. Up until then I never had a problem with fuel supply including a few trips to Colorado but not towing. We figure what happened, when the engine was assembled, they ran out of the correct fuel pump and a similar fuel pump was substituted. So, while the problem might be the Fuel filter you need to be sure all the fuel pumps are working correctly with the correct pressure. I would have a competent mechanic verify correct fuel pressure.

What causes an engine to "sputter"? Misfires. Misfires, set codes.
What causes misfires?:
Ignition issues - ignition issues set codes.
Fuel delivery problems:
Low fuel pressure sets codes.
Bad fuel injectors sets codes.
Electrical fuel pump problems sets codes.

You would be surprised at the difference in information available between a $30 code reader and a $300 code reader. I recently picked up this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098NC47SX/

And it's a world of difference from the cheap ELM32 based scanners.

You can also read live data with it.

Staring with the 2011 model year all Ford F-53 stripped chassis assembled by Detroit Chassis have an integral fuel pump and filter located in the fuel tank. It is recommended the fuel filter and pump be changed at 150,000 miles or 15 years, which ever comes first. One less place to have a fuel leak and fire.
