40 MPG City Maverick Pickup

Standard hybrid starting at $19,995 shows what can be accomplished with a little technology. It’s too small to tow a camper beyond 2,000 pounds, but there is no doubt this affordable design can be scaled up.

Would make it a tough choice versus all-electric if comparing same size trucks. Even better if Ford applies technology to motorhomes.

Actually with the 2.0L and AWD I think it can tow 4000 lbs.

Even better for everyone here is A) Its really light (like 3500 lbs), and B) I'm going to guess that the hybrid version will be flat towable.

Even if it isn't flat towable the FWD version will likely be dolly towable.

I've also heard that there may be a BEV version in the future.

So Ford says it is a full hybrid. Does that mean it is a plug in hybrid? If so what is the range on the battery before the engine starts?

They haven't said if its a PHEV and if they did they hid the plug really good (on all of Ford's plugins--including the new Lightning--the plug is just below and forward of the drivers side rear-view mirror. No such "hatch" for a plug on any of the Maverick's press photos & videos).

So I'm guessing no on the PHEV.

But if you go with the Eco-Boost 2.0: there goes your hybrid technology out the window...
But you'll still average 30 mpg with it.

Why... everything: of course!

By the way: Has anybody seen anything about their EPA highway mileage ratings yet?

While it is cool to see these hitting the market..... I'm sticking with my 2018 GMC Canyon Denali with the 2.8L "little" Duramax Diesel. I get 25MPG around town and upwards of 40MPG on the highway.

After I installed a Green Diesel Engineering Tune, I can make it from just north of Pittsburgh, PA to Cape Coral, FL (~1200 miles) stopping only once for fuel with a 21 gallon tank.

It appears the majority of the drivetrain (with exception of revised electric motor) was borrowed from Escape, so it would be a good guess that whether it is flat towable or not is the same as Escape. Just a guess though.

The Motor Trend article below shows it’s not plug in, although they speculate an AWD plug-in version is likely in future plans given space available for larger battery and Escape AWD option.

The truck itself is probably not something I’d buy for myself, but the technology and Ford’s commitment to hybrid powertrain is of great interest to me. Scaled in size to a light camper van like mine (just about twice as heavy), I would love 20 MPG city instead of my present 10 MPG in the city.

Even better would be Ford offering the technology on motorhome chassis so an Axis-size MH could get 13~14 MPG in city traffic. Specially if cost was kept low unlike all-electric chassis options requiring 200 kWh batteries or more.

Why do they bother to post the max trailer tow weights on a wannabe little truck? All that does is confuse buyers into thinking they can tow something that toy truck has no business hitching up to. I think it may be a good truck for the handyman type to commute to/from the hardware store or a yard man tow a small utility trailer with his lawnmower, other than that it's a cute little truck.

If other companies can also provide such fuel-economy improvements as Ford with the Maverick, using so little battery capacity, I would speculate that development of new light diesel vehicles is coming to an end. Minor electrification seems as fuel efficient and perhaps lower cost too. I think Diesel engines will endure for a while, but for much heavier commercial vehicles. Just my guess after seeing Ford and RAM step away from some light diesel applications.

In fairness to the little truck, it has greater towing capability than the Ranger XLT I bought my daughter when she was in school. The Ranger was either 1,000 or 1,500 pounds (can’t recall exactly), but I later towed more with it when I kept the truck after she traded for a car after graduation. It was a nice truck and was flat towable so I kept it for a few years after that. The engine was only 100 HP but it pulled a 2,000-pound U-Haul easily.

The hybrid Maverick should be able to tow motorcycles, jet skis, pop-up campers, occasional U-Haul to move, and even a small camper trailer like a Casita or similar if under 2,000 pounds.

The towing or payload doesn’t bother me as much as the 4-1/2 foot bed which seems too short to be useful. Also, from pictures, the inside may be too modern/wild for my conservative taste. I like the outside, and maybe the inside will surprise me when viewed in person.

P.S. — 40/33/37 MPG is far better than my Ranger got, even though it was lighter at 3,500 pounds. The base hybrid Maverick is about 3,700 pounds.

Ford Media shows AWD 2.0L EcoBoost towing a good size trailer large enough for a small family (the red truck).

The hybrid Maverick (blue truck) is shown towing a couple of jet skis. In addition to weight differences, there may be different frontal area limits.

It appears that LordsTown Motors is circling the bowl...

I really liked their use of technology the best: I hope they can get the ship back on course.

That is a bummer..... I want new businesses like this to survive.... its good for many reasons..... but unfortunately many fail as part of the process.

I feel bad for the people in Lordstown. The Federal and State governments bailed out GM back in 2008 and kept plants like Lordstown alive. Then GM pulled out of Lordstown and a new business steps in and it may fail leaving people high and dry again.
