I've learned from this thread that me pulling along the median and calling roadside assistance to siphon that awful 85 octane out of my tank the very downhill moment I see 3500ft on my dedicated altimeter is really the right thing to do.

It's all of the proofs of octane based engine failure you guys posted here that convinced me.

You just made it political so get off the high horse. Of course the strategic oil reserve has been tapped but not so blatantly just to create a perception of falling prices with the PR stunt. The very slight and very short price reduction was the equivalent of a photo op that they all use. Then it was hailed as falling prices which is of course a bogus claim, just manipulation. There are many ways to return us to energy independence, but shutting down pipelines, further restricting drilling permits, manipulation of the reserves isn't it. Who's in bed with the Russians now?

I was just looking at the Ford manual on the 7.3 and it says to use 87 octane any damage using less octane would not be covered under warranty. Then it said for best performance in high temperatures or towing use gas with an octane rating of 91 or better. A little knocking is okay if using 87 octane but if it's loud take it in for service
