Couch/Futon/Bed How do you open it?

Mine is in the slide out. Does it have to be slid out first? I can't seem to find the combination to open it up to make it into a bed. I'm trying to get ready to use it to go to Florida in January. I wanted to do the mod where you put the hinges on the front for additional storage. I can't even get it open to see how to unscrew the front.
