Converting wasted space

The galley is never big enough. We have two different tastes when it comes to coffee. She likes the low acid foo foo decaf stuff, and I like mine so strong, 100% Columbian, thick enough you cant see the first inch of the spoon. So we have two coffee makers. Combine that with a portable ice maker and you quickly run out of space.

So I'm juggling the coffee makers one morning and just looked around for a place to put them without reaching over under around and through the miniature galley area for coffee. Then is when I saw the perfect place, space that had nothing in it. The useless overhead bunk which had the cushions removed day one. How about that big open space over your head. That big empty hole.

I built a tray, designed to fit in the opening when parked and stowed in the bunk area secured by cleats to keep it from shifting under way. The coffee makers and the ice maker are secured to the tray with industrial strength Velcro. Added back up is a Velcro strap additionally holding them in place (not shown).

Do you have power up there to run them, or are you bringing them down from their perch for usage?
It's a GREAT idea!

If you look at it, the tray in use is an exact replica of the opening above your head. It hangs on brackets from the open space sides and back. There is a terminal strip behind the ice maker to the rear, mounted on the tray. It plugs in to a factory outlet under a cabinet in the proximity of the bunk. I don't run all three at once, either the two coffee makers or just the ice maker.

The tray is 1/2" plywood. A 1- 3/8" lattice strip is bent around the tray perimeter to make a lip to contain any spills. It is a little hefty with the ice maker, but you only need lift it about two inches to clear the opening and it slides to the rear and over the chocks that hold it in place. It slides on felt chair leg protectors.
