Awning Question

We are wondering if anyone has had the following concern:
When letting the awning out on our 2013 Thor ACE 30.1 it does not automatically stop at the end of unfurling, and if one continues to hold the switch down it will wind back up to the top backwards. In all the the RVs we had over the years we have never had this happen - once the awning reached the length of its extension it would stop.
Is this common to this make of motorhome, or do we have a problem?

If you just press the switch once and release does your awning not go out automatically, reach the end and reverse about 1/2 turn and stop?

No, one must hold the switch the entire process. Then , we must be attentive to when it has reached it's full extension that we release the switch.

Wish I could help you on this but my last two units have had automatic operation. I figured they all did now. What brand is your awning?

Ours also does not work automatically--a Carefree of Colorado awning.

Thats what mine is also and it operates great. I just extended it a week ago to answer another question on the forum. Completely automatic with wind protection.

The main thrust of my question is, is there a problem with the awning curling up backwards if one does not stop it at the end of its extension.

My 2017 ACE has the same style of awning. Yes its designed to operate that way. On the bad side of reverse roll up, to me would be the fact that the awning would not sit flush to the side of the camper. This would cause the awning arms to not be completely seated. There would also be a water channel created that would not allow even flow of rain water. Myself I feel that if the awning is not in the proper position bad things may happen while driving down the road.

Thank you "be happy", your response was helpful. And, all of the possible side effects of a reverse roll up are to be avoided, that's for sure, for all the reasons you stated.
Thank you "Tfryman", the link you attached was also helpful.
I came across a Youtube video where the presenter indicated a reverse roll up also tends to slow down the motor.

I had an issue with my previous mh awning also from carefree in colorado. I emailed them and they quickly replied to my question(s) about the awning. They were very helpful. I located them on the internet where they listed their email address for customer concerns.

Is it too tough to keep an eye on what you're doing, and let go of the button at the proper time?

Sorry... My Outlaw worked exactly as yours does. You'll know when it's backwards, when pushing the button to "retract": actually extends the awning. (and extend is now retracting things... )

Of course it is not "too tough to keep an eye on what you're doing, and let go of the button at the proper time". However, had you read my original post carefully you would have comprehended the specific concern. We have owned several RVs over the years and never had one that would continue rolling after it reached its extension and wrap up backwards. Therefore, the concern was, did we have a broken awning mechanism, or was this normal to this awning?

I was most appreciative to those responders who "respectfully" responded to my concern.

Sometimes you simply have to adapt to the situation that you find yourself I'm. I am genuinely sorry for your discomfort.

If you have a problem with your patio awning, it would be nice to know what is the make and model. All items installed in your coach by Thor should be listed on the inside of one of the bedroom closet doors. The operation manual included in your Thor information packet should include operation instructions for the patio awning. Thor Motorcoach use patio awnings from three different manufacturers (CofC, Dometic, Girard) and installs 18 different models. The Carefree of Colorado Latitude is automatic - just touch the three position switch to EXTEND and it extends and stops automatically. To retract, touch the switch to IN and the awning retracts and stows. When extended, it has a motion sensor in the right end that will automatically retract and stow the patio awning if it senses two rapid flutters.

Mine does the same thing. 2018 Thor hurricane 34j. This is my 4th rv, first automatic awning. First wind and boom! Wrapped over the top of the rv. $750 to fix. So far not a fan.

Our new rig has this model, and it will be interesting to see it in action...
